:hiya:

I hope you may have a suggestion:lease: , I'm about to pull out what hair I have left :suicide:

Rough win XP Set up:
desk top wired to wireless router
router connected to bb modem
wireless laptop and wireless Squeezebox on network

OK I'm trying to use Robocopy to back up the desk top to the laptop, keeps telling me:
ERROR 64 (0x00000040)
The specified network name is no longer available.

I've pinged the laptop from the desktop and visa versa, all seems fine,
I've tried \\laptop\folder etc and
mapping the laptop Q:\folder
Still the same result.....

I've re-run the network wizard just in case, still the same.

I believe it may be something shutting the network before the machines have finished talking - may this be the case and if so how on earth might I be able to sort it ?

:lease:
Any suggestion.......

Oh I have been copy and pasting across but its getting a bit complicated hence the back up program, so copy and pasting seems to be working fine..

Try connecting the laptop directly to the router to eliminate the wireless side of things. If that works OK, look at updating firmware in the router & drivers for the wireless card. Maybe try a different wireless channel.

MS Knowledgebase article on connectivity trouble-shooting here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325487/en-us).

That would suggest to me the problem is at the desktop end.

Before getting too bogged down in the technical stuff, try another cable from desktop to router, another port on the router & updating drivers for the desktop's network card/chipset.

Cool thanks for the tips was a bit worring looking down that rather long list.

I'll have a bash in the morning
Cheers:smashin:

First I would check that both networks are called the same thing. Right click on "My Computer" goto "Properties" and then the "Computer Name" tab and ensure both have the same network (workgroup) name. I am assuming they have since you ran the network wizard but might as well get this out the way first....

This sounds like a firewall issue. Do you have any firewalls running on the desktop?

If you're on a Linksys WiFi router upgrading the firmware to the current version would be the first thing I'd try, this was a known issue of some description on a couple of models at least. :)

Just a couple of quick thoughts.

You say you are running a robocopy script to copy from Desktop to Laptop - Are you sure the laptop isn't dropping into standby before the script ends?

Try changing the hostnames in your robocopy script to the LAN IP addresses of the source and destination machines

Lastly have you looked at Synctoy by MS? free download from the MS website that is basically a GUI version of Robocopy, works sweetly for backing up all my machines to a NAS

Any software firewalls running, that don't have the application or other IP addresses authorised?

Make sure you've the latest drivers on both machines, and it could be a faulty NIC. I was experiencing network drop outs a while ago, and it turned out the NIC in one of my servers was faulty.

Ohoo.. Fun and games :suicide:

The desk top does hang now and then which leads me to believe your suggestion that the desk top has something wrong is spot on!

Ok have updated all the bits and bobs,
tried another cable,

Still the sme result :god:

Cheers for starting simply I like simple:smashin:
- Yep both have the same workgroup name,
- Fire wall is off on the desktop as I believe the router takes care of that side of things.

mine's a D-Link, updated that just incase :)
Still the same....

Laptop is set for what 20 mins before it sleeps, robocopy starts running straight away and shows failed results in a few minuites.......

Ah how do you let robocopy know it is an IP address and not a normal address it seems to throw a fit when it can't find 192etc

May just have a look at Synctoy, a few more frustrating hours I think on robocopy, as I must almost be there......:suicide:
Cheers for the tip though!

Nop don't have them running, only the router does the firewall stuff, as far as I know.:god:

Sorry.. whats an NIC please ?
Drivers all updated:smashin:

Still the same :suicide: :suicide: :suicide:

:rotfl:
Just tried running the script on the laptop to see if it could do the backing up and IT CAN.....

Same script desktop source and laptop destination and it has backed up test folders twice now with no problems...

Why can't my desktop work and see the laptop

I'm baffled, :lease: any ideas as to whats going on :lease:

NIC = Network Interface Card

Try clearing the Event Logs on both PCs & then run from the desktop again. When it fails, check the event logs for specific errors. That may give a clue as to what's failing.

NIC  cheers!

Cleared the Application and System logs, on both machines:
Once I'd run robocopy on the laptop checked the logs and nothing there in either app or sys.
The desk top showed in the System log:
Information, date, time, Service Control Manager, None, 7036 & 7035
Which is as far as I can work out letting me know that it is ok to make a log....

Oh and the log from robocopy:

Weard a!
The file Icon appears on the laptop but it is unable to open I guess as it is not all there...:suicide:

Do you think it would be a bit extream to format the desk top and fingers crossed once it is back up and running it would work?

I take it the laptop is called CHARLIE? What was suggested before was to replace the machine name (CHARLIE) with the machine IP address. Run IPCONFIG/ALL from a Command Prompt on the laptop to ascertain the IP address & substitue this for CHARLIE in the Robocopy script. ie:

Dest : \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\F\Temp\

Those filenames also look a bit complex, what with all the hyphens & spaces. Looks like they end with a space too? Maybe worth trying to run the script with some random data with more standard filenames?
