PowerDVD 7

Hi

I recently started using PowerDVD 7 to feed my projector (I think my old DENON 3800 via component looks better ), I have read a few places that I should use 50Hz for PAL DVDs but that isn't an option, is there an add-on like ffdshow or something I could use, will this improve things?

Any help gratefully received, HTPC is all very new to me.

Cheers

Use Theatertek Widely regarded as the best software DVD Player.

I think they still do the free 2 week demo so you can compare with Powerdvd7 before you buy.

Try setting your desktop refresh rate to 50Hz.

I would try the refresh rate on the desktop, too.

Well, I have heard quite a few folk say that and I must say I have the complete opposite view. Other than the ability to use ffdshow I can't find a single thing to like about the program. Usability is poor, stability isn't stable (certainly with ffdshow enabled) and the responsiveness of the program is very sluggish. To be honest, I prefer WinDVD Still, try before you buy and all that!

Cheers guys

Setting desktop to 50Hz is one of the problems as it isn't an option available under catalyst (using Radeon X1600 Pro).

I did update my catalyst to the new 6.7 release and that looked better, but I did have a couple of lock-ups which I need to investigate this evening.

What's the best way to try and force the desktop to 50Hz?

Cheers

Sounds like your projector is reporting via EDID that it will not accept 50Hz.

It could be that the EDID info is incorrect but be careful about forcing a refresh rate that your display can't handle as you could permanently damage it.

I don't know if it's to do with running the Optoma in CLONE' mode with my viewsonic monitor?

The HD72 is capable of 50Hz, I just can't find a way to force it, perhaps I'll try disabling the normal monitor and trying again.....

Cheers

Try downloading Powerstrip from the link below

http://entechtaiwan.net/util/ps.shtm

You may be able to set the refresh rate to 50Hz using this program.

Thanks all for your replies, I always worry about powerstrip as it appears so complicated

I may have found the answer on the ATI customer support page, you need to hack the registry with the catalyst drivers to enable 50Hz. Anyone interested the 'how to' is here:

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...asp?deptID=894

Thanks again.

Is there any advantage to using PowerDVD over, say, just using the Cyberlink DVD decoder with Media Player Classic?

MP classic is a lot more configurable than Power DVD but the PQ will be the same as you will be using the same codecs.

Was just curious because PowerDVD had a load of deinterlacing options, weren't sure if they were player-specific or part of the codec.

Looks like there's a new version of PowerDVD 7 out today, in case it's relevant.

Hi BigBry,

Thanks, do you have a link, I have had a look over on the Cyberlink site and can't see any updates?

I think the problem is more with the Catalyst drivers than anything...

Good to see another Essex boy on here

I was looking at the trial version and it was a new build yesterday, version 7.0.1813.0 and I got a version from here;

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...load_locations

I don't use it but it's to see if it improves the BBC HD Freeview playback. I'm not sure if it will help but I'm sure you can use any existing valid key and see if there's a difference?

Good luck.
