Had a quick look and I don't think anyone else has posted this information. But if they have then sorry.

Sony has unveiled its first internal Blu-ray rewritable drive, capable of storing up to 50GB on a double-sided disc.

The BWU-100A drive supports both BD-R (write once) or BD-RE (rewritable) discs, which also provide sufficient capacity to store up to four hours of high-definition video using HDV 1080i. The new drive also supports singled-sided 25GB discs, which can be burnt in about 50 minutes.

The drive also reads and records to CDs and single and double layer DVD discs in a variety of formats.

'Now consumers, professional videographers and filmmakers can store, record and experience the highest capacity of high-definition video available - from capture to playback,' said Bob DeMoulin, marketing manager for branded storage products in Sony Electronics' IT Products Division. 'Our Blu-ray Disc drive represents a significant leap in storage technology.'

CyberLink software for capturing, authoring, editing and burning high-definition personal content captured by a HDV 1080i format camcorder and for converting video to standard-definition resolution for burning onto DVDs is included.

The internal drive features an IDE (ATA/ATAPI) interface and standard 5.25-inch form factor and will cost around $750 when it begins shipping in the US in August.

At the moment, for me, this really all comes down to a money v storage space issue. Here's what I mean.

The current Blu Ray option

to record 4 hours of HD on one disc

New Blu-Ray re-writable drive......... 750 dollars
Blu-Ray blank disc...............16-20 dollars

TOTAL....... 770 dollars=£415

To record 4 hours of true HD content (eg BBC HD transport streams)on 8 DVD+Rs/DVD+RWs or 4 Dual Layer discs...kept in a spindle for economic storage

4 to 8 discs

TOTAL cost between £1 to £5

I wont be buying Blu Ray rewriteable drivesfor a LONG time. At least not until I run out of storage space!!

This is certainly better than the 650 pounds price listed for the other blu-ray burners but its got a huge way to go untill it competes with hardrives for storage prices.

Here's (http://www.yodobashi.com/enjoy/more/productslist/cat_38974453_56096664/53421514.html) some of the Blu-ray drives you can get in Japan right now. I've seen them over here for about a month or so.

To save you the conversion, they're around 450-500 pounds.
