I am seriously thinking of getting one of these the (at least) two month wait before the UK launch seems too long. The only reservation I have is with the "Region 1" coding. I've just checked my DVD collection and 90% are region 2!

Does anyone know if there is a region hack or the possibility of one in the future?

...sorry if this has been answered already, but I couldn't find a relevant thread!

There is no region hack as of yet - US machines traditionally don't get the attention of multi-region modders as there isn't the same drive to import European titles as there is the other way around.

Regardless, even if a multi-region mod did become available it would do little good as the machine isn't PAL compatible. Ergo even if the machine was region 2 compatible your discs still wouldn't play.

Your options are then to either wait for a UK HD DVD player (due November) that will hopefully play UK SD DVDs, UK HD DVDs and US HD DVDs. Or import from the US and maintain a second R2 DVD player.

Thanks for that JamesL. I may have to wait ...damn!
I have just bought a Pioneer 506 XDE (still in it's box in the lounge) and wanted to test it's HD capabilities. I am a bit stuck at the moment - cannot get sky HD because of the problems with the Pioneer plasmas and now this !

Oh well...only a few more months.

I wouldn't give up hope entirely. I bought a Region 1 Toshiba 3107 in oct 97. Long before they were launched in the uk. Sure enough pal discs without a region code made the machine display "not ntsc"

But a chip soon came out which enabled this. So full multi region capability.
My point being, was the machine could play pal. It was just not enabled.

It is unlikely he A1 can be hacked, but don't rule it out. It may only need someone clever to hack the firmware.

Even if you can hack the player, what is the point. It is 'NTSC' only so you would be limited to R1, R2 NTSC (Japan not europe) and R3. R2 PAL (UK)would still not work.

I really think a sticky faq is needed in this forum....

That was my point. My 3107 was "NTSC Only". But it showed the circuits were there for pal.
Do we really know 100%?

The Tosh's are basically PCs, I am sure they could output PAL with a firmware hack.

I was told by a 'reliable' source that PAL just isn't in there. I don't know whether this is true or not but it is the same for many DVD players from the states nowdays.

Does it work? Is it real? It's not just a box marked "Region Hack" is it? ;)
