View Full Version : Just to clarify - the Toshiba HD-A1 does NOT play 25p discs

This might already have been covered but I thought I should clarify just in case.

I burned a 25p MPEG-2 HD DVD (onto standard DVD-R media, which the Toshiba HD-A1 reads). The file on the disc is 1920x1080, MPEG-2, with 25fps video.

The player DOES play the disc, but the video is sped up and stutters.

So, if European HD DVDs do end up being 25fps, you won't be able to watch them. The test I did was in MPEG-2 because I've got no way of authoring discs with the VC1 codec but it's a safe bet they'll have the same effect.

Just thought I should share my findings :)

Ah well, the US releases dates are almost always better than the UK ones anyway!

interesting, but do we know Euro discs will be mastered 25fps? They may be 24fps and simply let the player decide the output framerate.

does anyone know what US HDDVDs are mastered at - 24fps, 30fps?

As far as I'm aware the current US HD-DVD titiles are 1080/24.

Yeah, that's right.

If the European distributors have any sense at all they'll put them out in 24p. They'd be utterly insane not to.

I think the DVD Forum/Consortium (which is it?) has created the 25p HD DVD standard for convenience, but I don't think anyone has said it'll be used for Europe.

And even if they did, the studios would hopefully ignore it - like they did with MPEG Audio being the standard for DVD sound in Europe.

Surely 25p will be limited to TV content only?

Its actually cheaper for them to use the same master as the US

thats good to know. At least that keeps open the possibility for future players to output 24/48/72p rather than nasty 60Hz stutter-o-vision.

Yup - It's a pity my display doesn't support those :(
