Hi

I am looking to get a NAS to store my music for purposes of sharing over my sonos system. The popular choice seems to be the Buffalo Linkstation but there seems to be a variety of flavours.....in particular the regular linkstation verus the home server

HS-D300GL Home Server
HD-HG300LAN - Regular Linkstation

I can see the different technical specs from the Buffalo website....but what are peoples experiences when using these two for sharing music over sonos?

I use a 500GB Lacie Ethernet disk attached to a DLINK DSL-G604T

So far this has 400CDs in FLAC format, using 138GB

Sonos occasionally skips part of a track, but so far I put this down to an IP conflict somewhere (kids with laptops, the problem goes away when they're not here)

My biggest problem was positioning Sonos boxes in range of each other - old houses have thick walls!

I don't have a Sonos but I stream to my PC from a Linkstation HD-250 with no problems. IIRC the Sonus will happily access a network share so the extra expense of the home Server version isn't worth it IMHO. Even if you do decide in the future that a server would be good the Linkstations are fairly easy to hack and install one.

I have just bought the HD-HG300LAN Linkstation to use with my Sonos.
I am currently loading it with music and hoping to test it out with the Sonos this weekend.

All the feedback I have read on various forums suggets there should be no problem using the linkstation with the Sonos.

The only difference I can see between teh 2 products you mention is that the Home Server has built-in DLNA certification which probably makes it a bit more future proof.

If you are mainly using it with the Sonos then I would go with the cheapest one.

BUMP!

I have been looking for the right NAS for my Sonos for ages now! I am just going round and round and just not finding the right one. I have trawled the Forums for ages getting tips ect... And I am back to quare one. I am looking for a single drive NAS which will suffice my needs for the following...

-I bought the Sonos system for ease of use... I am no Computer tech minded either, so I am looking for a NAS to be simple to use, easy to set up.
-Noise isnt a problem as it will be stored away in another well ventillated room.
-Security... Heard some issues concerning some NAS drives... I want it secure.
-Size of about 500GB will be more than enough for my needs. I plan only to store my music and photos on it. I will use another USB drive to back up my other docs.
-Sleep... I wish the NAs to switch itself off when not in use. (Power down)
-Printer... Will want to connect a printer to it at some stage, but not over important.

I have shortlisted these below...maybe I have missed one?

WD Mybook World Edition 500GB (WD Netcentre expired)
Maxtor Shared Storage II 500GB
Buffalo Linkstation Pro 500GB
Synology DS-106e
LaCie Ethernet Disk mini V2 -500GB

Can someone recommend one, especially to use for Sonos... Remember 'simplicity' is an issue.

Thanks in advance.

I use the Buffalo's. Generally very good. Good 2 year warranty as well (which I have had to use without a problem) and tech support.

I also use a WD Mybook (USB version) and it seems o.k.

Unfortunately, I cant get hold of Buffalo here. Seems like the Maxtor is popular and has a reasonable price... Starting to favour the Maxtor!

You might want to head over to the Sonos forums as this is a common question on there: http://forums.sonos.com/
