high def movies, jerky playback with MP10 and theatertek

i downloaded some high def sample clips from microsoft website and allt hese play flawlessly with mp10 and tt and on my 42" plasma.

i downloaded some high def movies and when i watch them on my plasma and my monitor they have jerky playback and is unwatchable.

any ideas what is causing it, not sur eif its related to the graphice car, nvidia 6800le, dont think it is the software and its mp10 and tt that have problems playing it yet the content i got from microsof tis fine

any ideas what could be causing this jerky playback?

For HD .mkv files (x264) you need CoreAVC as the codec and Media Player Classic as the player. Luckily they are both free.
There is no current working hardware support support for these files so the graphics card doesn't matter.

GIGABYTE GA-8IPE 1000 PRO G MOTHERBOARD

PENTIUM 4 3GHZ CPU

OCZ PC4400 1GB RAM HEATSINK 2 X 512 DUAL CHANNEL

LEADTEK WINFAST GEFORCE 6800 LE

O/S MICROSOFT OEM WINDOWS XP MEDIA CENTER 2005

the films im trying to watch are

the ring 2 - 1080i and is 91 .ts files (9gb)

alexander - 1080 and is 146 .ts files (15gb)

terminator - 720p x264 avi file (4.6gb)

Just downloaded some .ts 'the aviator' movie files which are 1080i and it seems to play smoother and without problem. so cant figure out why i have problems with the other files.

surely its not my pc spec thats lacking is it?

Try joining the parts of the ts file into one? Go into dos, goto the directory you have the files in, type copy /B *.ts mergedfilewithanewname.ts

Make sure you only have one set of files in the directory, else you'll get a rather strange combo-movie.

The hardware spec is fine, you've just got a settings problem somewhere.

Try closing some other apps that are running before you watch it ( like messengers etc..) as this can have an effect on your system performance.
Also in your windows system properties adjust the advanced settings to better performance as this will speed up your system a little.

Download the latest drivers for your nvidia graphics card - they released some new ones a short while ago.

I agree with andy - 1080i and up eat up tremendous resources. Make sure your machine is running "clean" if possible.

Also, check defragmentation on your hard drive. Are other background processes happening (recording shows)?

I'm not too familiar with the Leadtek flavor of the GEFORCE 6800 card, but see if you get similar issues on another PC with another dedicated card.

Best of luck!

You don't state what MPEG2/DVD decoder you have installed. The best is the one from Nvidia although PowerDVD has its fans.. Unistall unwanted CODECs then install a trial of the Nvidia CODEC. You also need a better player than WMP. The best is Theatertek this will seemlessly play back all the little .ts files without you having to stitch thm together with HDTV2MPEG it also includes the Nvidia CODEC.

Your hardware is more than ample for the job for 1080i .ts files. My Athlon XP 2000+ with FX5200 plays such files easily.

Im not sure if this would help as tt plays all the files continually, also terminator is a single file and has same problems. I could try it but dont have a floppy so will need to try my ultimate boot disc and boot from dvd drive, as im not that clued up on dos what exactly do i need to type in dos, i have done a few things in dos ie fdisk and format etc but not much else.

here is the directory one of the films is in E:\HD MOVIES\The Ring 2

ok will do give that a try although i did not have anything else running but no doubt i have some background things running.

im running the nvidea video decoder 4020.203.0.0 as supplied with my nvidia drivers, i have the latest nvidia pure video decoder but not tried installing it yet. I use theatertek and mp10, i use theatertek for movies and mp10 for music and compressed video clips. Well glad to hear my pc spec is ok, i just need to find out what i need to do to fix this playback problem.

BIG thanks to all for help and replies.

When playing these .ts files, what is the load on the CPU?

(CTRL-ALT-DEL and select Performance)

In Theatertek, what effect on CPU usage does enabling and disabling DXVA have?
(Under Configuration, video, advanced - at least on TT2.3)

What version of Nvidia driver are you using?

coreavc is not free on the website, but got it for free anyway ahem

anyway installed it and it plays the 264 movie just fine, so thanks for the tip, however it wont play the mkv file and it does not say that it supports this format unless im missing something but it just freezes when i try to play it.

i have now updated to the latest nvidia drivers and installed the nvidia purevideo codecand the high def movies are playing fine, so im happy now, thanks to all for the help and tips.

one thing though im not sure if the nvidia pureideo codec is the same codec thats included with the drivers or whether this is a better codec or not but i installed the latest of both anyway.

one thing though i have nero codecs installed and i dont know how to remove them without removing nero, i only have a few nero items installed as i did not install the entire suite.

newer nvidia drivers 91.31, i was using the same as you before i updated. and i am now using .223 of purevideo.

i think it was more the purevideo codec that sorted my problem as after installing it playback seemed to be fine but i only watched it briefly, i then updated the drivers.

the new drivers have a different control panel but theres an option to change back to classic view which i have done, i am familier with this layout now and it was confusing enough getting used to it.
