Sign language person blocking my film

I have very occassionallly come across programs, usually late at night where there is a person in the bottom corner doing sign language for the deaf, and despite the fact that it annoys me, have ignored it, as it's very rare.

However, tonight it was on a film on one of the Sky movie channels at 8.00pm and the person was quite big and blocked a large part of the film.

Am I being thick and missing an option for those who can hear to turn this feature off, or is it something that you're stuck with on programmes that have this feature?

Pain

Unfortunatley it appears to be something were stuck with,,,
My daughter watches the omnibus edition of hollyoaks on a sunday..(Channel 4 )
and the signing person covers quite a large area at the bottom right of the screen.....much to my daughters annoyance....i am dismayed that this is not an option you can switch off or on...

If it is , would someone please enlighten me ....

Cheers

There's an FAQ on the Sky website regarding it.
Wednesday night on Sky Movies 5 or 6 I think it is, the 'Main Feature' is for deaf folks.
You can't turn off the signing guy, as the film's been 'recoded' with him in it.

To answer the original question, No you can't turn the man off.

Jusat to add I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that OFCOM have stipulated that a certain percentage of programmes must have this feature.

With umpteen Sky film channels showing the same films over and over again, I don't see a problem with it being signed for those poor people who don't have the gift of hearing.

Indeed, I think it's bloody great that deaf people have this facility, and don't see why they should all be made to stay up until 1:00am to access TV programmes.

Try putting an Eminem CD on while watching the program and turn the TV volume down. It can be very funny when the lyrics tie in nicely with the actions of the signing translator on the screen. It's surprising how often they tie up.

Btw, I'm not taking the mickey out of deaf people, I have been slowly learning sign language myself through friends btw.

Just to clarify. I don't see signing for deaf people as a problem, I just found it annoying as I'm not deaf. If they were somehow able to make it an optional feature like subtitles then they could introduce it on more programmes at more reasonable times and those that want it can have it and those that dont can switch ot off.

I'm not asking to get rid of it, just a choice.

Just go up to the little person & very kindly ask them to move. People can be very accomodating if you're polite

Years ago when i first got my DVB tv i wrote to ask channel 4 about the woman on hollyoaks on sundays.

At the time they said they were forced to do it by ofcom. Apparantly the powers that be were attempting to develop a layer system where you could turn it on and off a bit like subtitles, or the voice descriptions for the blind. However it appears they have abandoned this plan as it can't be "that" hard to do that it's taken 6 years so far to develop.

For deaf people who are illiterate?

Or maybe they prefer signing. I suppose it's no different to saying if subtitles are there anyway, why bother with sound for anyone.
