hi there, this is not strictly related to av but here goes..... i bought something from empire direct 2 weeks ago which has since become unusable and it blew the electrics in the house too!! so my wife phoned empire up only to be told to get in touch with the manufacturer of the item. The lady she spoke to said no one can see us for two and a half weeks which i find totally unacepptable as we use and need the item every day! I thought the seller of the item was resposible for the first year of the warranty (not the manufacturer) do you think there is anything i can do?? if anyone has any links to the appropriate web sites like trading satandards etc im sure this would help back up my case.

Under the distance selling regulations you have a 7 day cooling off period which I guess has expired. There is a lot of info availble on the net concerning consumer rights. Try this link

I've you got a manufactorers warranty with the item then you can choose to use that if you want but like you say Empire are responsible as well and can't just fob you off like that. This link (http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/) goes to the Trading Standards website and if you put your postcode in to box at the top right you'll get the phone number of your nearest office.
