Blue-ray for music?

Does anyone think we'll see blue-ray take over from red-ray for music? The blue-ray CDs could be miles smaller which would be pretty cool

Agreed. Only audiophiles really appreciate the difference between a CD and an SACD or DVD-Audio disc. Whereas your average joe is still more than happy with CD (I know I am!).

I'm happy with CD when it's mastered right, but so often these days albums are over-compressed and volume maximised. Takes the dynamics right out of the music and causes listening fatigue.

I tend to think the average joe is happier with MP3.

I have no problem with blu-ray for music. HD-DVD for music as well. These are just the media format. I think the better question is which audio format for music, HD-DTS, Dolby + or Dolby TrueHD ???

Most people haven't got equipment that's capable of getting even half decent sound out of a standard CD.

The average punter either doesn't care about sound quality or isn't prepared to pay for it.

What chance has any HD audio format got?

The price will fall quite quickly. The discs could even be smaller - 2 inches or something! And with high sample rates. Groovy!

Just can't see this, it will all be solid state MP3 'style' players. Even CD is looking long in the tooth now.The rest is wishful thinking I think.

I don't usually disagree with my namesake, but I think this is a great idea. I'm not entirely optimistic but I'd love to see it happen. As far as I am concerned, SACD & DVD-A have failed, and one of the HD video formats at least is much more likely to become adopted as the new disc standard.

I would love it to happen, just can't see it happening though. Unfortunately the market doesn't always deliver what I want , it goes with the masses. The audiophiles debated whether DVDA or SACD would win. Apple did and by a convincing margin and few saw it coming.

What about about high resolution lossey formats?

I don't see a new format based on improved sound quality alone working, SACD/DVD-A proved that to me, although high prices and low availability of disks was as much a factor as the success of MP3s/lack of interest in sound quality.

I would be mildly confident that an all singing and dancing format (high quality multi channel sound, music videos in both high quality and portable formats, web links, pre ripped MP3s/WMA) would eventually take over from CDs if it was priced correctly (about the same as CDs) and had sufficient support from the music studios. They need to do something or they risk being made completely obsolete by Apple.

I would like to see these small blue-ray discs, and players that read the disk and put it onto built in solid state memory. That would be cool.
