Came across this (http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/713/713096p1.html) article which makes for an interesting read.
Interesting read.
I don't know why no one suggests turning off the backlight while the pixels are changing. Something which would be very easy with LED backlights. This would comletely elliminate the motion smear and if done at 100Hz would not affect the viewer.

I've read about manufacturers researching strobing the backlight to eliminate it. I do wonder if this will create any problem for photosensitive epileptics though (strobing a backlight is different to the refreshrate of CRTs I think).

They are working on it. There are already 120Hz LCDs in Japan and the USA coming onto the market - but you need some more video processing....and so cost.
As half the threads here seem to be about price matching, you can see why manufacturers are cautious in introducing this feature. Even £10 cost up can be death in this market.
