Urgent Tom Tom 910 question and a few less urgent.

Right, have just been told my TomTom 910 is in at my local PC World to pick up - price £440.

This is after weeks after hard decision and reading. It was a choice between the TomTom and the Garmin Nuvi. In the end, the ability to program multiple way points, avoid a roadblock, and better blutooth phone support swayed it.

The urgent question.

I'm picking the TomTom up at 9am tomorrow and then I am flying out to Menorca. Does the TomTom have Menorca preinstalled? Just working out whether to take it with me or not.

The less urgent questions. I have heard horror stories about the mount and the charging. can anyone give me first hand experience - good or bad?

In other words, have I made the right choice?

PC World have told me that if it is faulty I can't take it back instore I have to deal with TomTom. I normally find them very good over faulty items, so not sure where this policy comes from.

Thanks in advance for your help!

hi,
not sure about your first question but i bought the 510 from pc world (same mount as the 910) and the connection was'nt very good. any bumps in the road were causing the unit to switch off.
i took it back to pc world about 4 days later and refunded me after a bit of argueing.
they said that the new stock was arriving the following day that had extra clips or something for the mount and tried to get me to have one of those.
so its possible that you've got a mount which hopefully should be better.
Let us know how you get on
Rick

If you buy it from PC World, your contract is with them not TomTom.Cannot see how they can refuse to refund if it is unsuitable or faulty. If you pay by credit card you will be covered anyway.

From Tom Tom's description of their Iberia map:

Detailed regional map of Spain, Portugal and Andorra connected to the Western European major road network. Includes Gibraltar and the Balearic Islands (Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera).

So you should be OK.

PCW would be in clear beach of the Sale of Goods Act if they refused to replace or refund a faulty product. Unsuitable would be at their discretion.

The switching off is because it comes loose and the software is set to turn it off if unplugged from it mount. It has internal batteries so no physical reason for it to turn off. As a quick fix a later bit of firmware was released which turned off the automatic turn off function so that even those with dogy mounts would not turn off. I have heard that the mounts are now better but do not know how you tell which mount you have. Let us know how you get on as I would like to buy one too, but have held off for a bit.

I hope he's found something better to do in Minorca than log onto the Forums.

IIRC, PCW were offering 10% off on launch so maybe it's original stock? Best current price appears to be £462 at Dixons with voucher 309704TT.

I'm back now.

It was actually 450 with the 10% discount (now discontinued).

And what a complete crock that unit was!

First thing I did on landing was go straight to PC World who refunded my money.

It was a second batch unit, but the mount was AWFUL!

It drooped worse than an 80 year old who had spent the night on the ****. Every time we went over a bump, it disconnected and drooped even more.

The bluetooth didn't work properly either.

Anyone got any opinions on the 310d from halfords?

I've had my 910 for about four days now and have the following comments:
* No problems at all with the power connection from the mount to the unit
* Most disappointed with the droop (I've now mounted it very low so that it sits on the dash). The mount for my previous 300 was rock solid - why mess with a good thing?
* Bluetooth finds my Nokia 8800 as soon as I turn it on
* Traffic data and re-routing works fine
* Latest (paid for and downloaded) Safety camera info is poor compared to my Road Angel.
So far I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt. Watch this space...

Phone tomtom and they'll said you a new improved mount that doesn't droop
also have you tried installing the traffic cameras from pocketgps
they're much more accurate.

Except according to PC World I had one of the latest mounts. Not sure how he knew, but he started off by suggesting that I return it to TomTom and ask for a new mount - then he looked at it and said it WAS a new mount.

sould like he's tryingto fob you off.....

There doen't appear to be an obvious visual difference between the old and new mounts. If you phone tom tom they should just send you out a new mount....
