Which DLP? Sagem vs. Samsung
Okay,
Now i'm sure threads like this are pretty much a dime a dozen, but i'll be brave and ask anyway... (and please be gentle, i'm new)
I've got enough money together to purchase a nice new TV. I don't like the picture quality from an LCD, the Samsung HD CRT (which was my original choice) appears to be nothing short of a laughing stock and i'm not sure about Plasma after watching two friends suffer bad problems after only a few short months (perhaps they were just unlucky, but they've given me cold feet).
Now, I actually work with TV's for a living, but I don't work for anywhere that actually stocks the Sagem, nor is it a place that can run any kind of HD feed to compair other sets.
I've already eliminated the Sony A12 series, since I found the picture of a lesser quality (in both 42 and 50 inches) than the Samsung SP46L6HX.
I like the fact that the Sagem has 2 HDMI sockets opposed to either of the Samsung's only having the one.
I'm also impressed by the Samsung SP50L7HXX (although it's been some time since I saw one, so compairing from memory is difficult).
Size nor cost is really any issue here and being a avid gamer, I want something that will really make my Xbox 360 look it's very best. I'm probably leaning more toward the Sagem right now (despite the fact I can get the SP46L6HX at a really good price), but would love to hear the opinions of others but making my mind up fully.
So, i'd like to hear from those who have maybe already gone through the same thought process as this and perhaps pro's and con's of the set you chose (as although I get to work with some of these sets, I don't really get to see them in a realistic lighting environment nor am I able to really tinker with them).
Thanks for reading and if you reply, thanks a ton for helping me make a massive decision.

Samsung SP50L7 all the way! 50" glory, great picture quality, and a great looking set aesthetically.
Are you a member of Costco, or can you be? Because they are selling it for £1530 with there no squibble warranty. Also they do the Samsung SP67L6HX for 2.3k as you said size is no problem LOL!

Well i looked at loads of DLP and RPTV sets and the sagem blew them all away for picture quality.Brought one from avwow and it's picture quality seems to get better and better.
Just a shame about the few problems some sets seem to have.

I've looked at hundreds as well, plasma, LCD etc and the Sagem is the best; the SP50L7 is also as good.
i dont think any DLP will ever look more attractive than the Sagems (all of them)
the 55'' SXRD that we all love is a bit bland, it looks like a factory roof ventilator; but this doesn't mean its ugly

SAGEM HD-D56 dlp beside a Panny PWD6 plasma both showing Sky RGB
The Sagem is a lot brighter than the Panny, so bright that I can't take a good picture in a darkened room. The Panny also suffers from reflections, and the SAGEM doesn't. The size difference is more than anticipated, 1330 sq inches compared to 750 sq inches.
Finally took a photo to show the relative brightness, the panny is reflection hell during the day.

There is very little difference in black levels.

I have the SP46. It is a great TV. The picture with my Xbox 360 is fantastic If you can get this "at a really good price,"
go for it. You will not be disappointed.

The Samsung SP46L6 has such a bad PQ compared to the Sagem it's ridiculous.
I would never buy a DLP if it would be as bad as that.
Luckily, the Sagem has a really nice picture but you should be aware of that almost all (if not all) sets hum, and this might bugger you and then again it might not.

There is no hum on the 56" as it uses the H2+ chip (one mirror for each pixel)
The 45" and 50" with the H4 chip hum/buzz as the chip only has 1/2 the mirrors and wobbles the mirrors to produce 2 pixels from one mirror, the wobble causing the hum/buzz. There is a fan in the 56" but it's very quiet, you can only hear it when you mute the sound.
These dlps are not for watching SD signals at close range (less than 3m) as every artifact is clearly on display, and SD looks bad on a screen this size. 4m+ ad the SD picture looks great. HD looks fantastic at close range so the Xbox should look great, I'll post some Oblivion pictures from my PC later.
Another drawback is viewing height, if your eyes are below the top of the screen and above the bottom, all is fine. Stand above or below and the brightness reduces very quickly. Angle of view is very good about 140 degrees IMHO.
Comparing the Panny and Sagem side by side, the Panny has a definate orange tint, skin tones look better on the Sagem (which surprised me greatly).

In my opinion, and it is all subjective Mac, the SP46 has a fantastic picture.

All our opinions are subjective, of course.
But having had both sets at my home, as I wanted to substitute the humming Sagem, and adjusting & tweaking the picture 'til I got blue in the face, I almost cried because of the inferior PQ.
Never thought that there could be so much difference in PQ.
I, for one, could never live with a TV where the picture looks like it's painted with watercolor. (Not all the time, but you must have seen it?)
Sagem's PQ isn't perfect either but it really is a lot better.
@ [nothing]
Oh, there's also the possibility you might see the rainbow effect on a DLP.
I certainly did (and still do) but it's like the brain sort of filters it out and as you get used to a larger screen, your eyes doesn't move all over the place any longer.
It is really not a problem any more, but some people might even feel nauseous.

That is of course true, then again not a problem in the real world.
Most people I know tend to sit down when they are watching TV
