Which SVS sub? (PB10-NSD or SB12-PLUS)

OK … I’ll admit to having never heard of SVS until a month ago (from this forum), I am changing out my complete home theatre system bit by bit .. just bought a Yamaha 757 amp (after all the Best Buy awards & great reviews it received)

So looking for a new sub … the room size is 4.7 x 5.7m

Had been considering the PB10-NSD, will this work OK in this size room ? … the alternative could be PB12-NSD, but it’s quite a price hike to that unit, and unless I am going to get huge benefits, then expense is higher than I really want to go.

Read about the SB12-PLUS, is this likely to be a candidate, or would this be inferior to PB10-NSD in performance.

Family constraints mean I don’t get to crank the sound up high that often, so overall power handling is not that much of an issue.

Welcome any advice.

Power is not so much about volume, it also gives you control and reduces distortion. A stressed sub will probably be as loud if not louder because it will be distorting. in fact try to ignore the specifications as much as you can and go on referral and best of all listen for yourself.

SB12 is not available yet but the Plus driver is superior to the NSD so you would expect it to perform better than the PB12 NSD.

In fact I am not sure you can get the NSD in the UK either.

I think your options are ISD and Plus.

You should also consider the BK subs as they are well regarded here and the Monolith is also available in wood veneers and downward firing which is arguably better looking than the similiar performing PB10.

The PB10 ISD will be more than enough for your room, IMO.
My room is roughly 6 x 4M and the sub volume is about 60%.
And I like mine around 10 dB hot

You should be aware that the PB10 is the baby in the range and it's excellent.
You won't be able to turn it full up, I bet.
Obviously the bigger the better, but if price is very important, you won't go wrong, especially with the forum offer

Does it have to be a SVS ? I'd consider the BK subs IMO .. haven't heard one personally - but will do in 2 weeks time ... Going on specs and recent tests they are more than a match for the SVS subs, and it was a refreshing change to get such good customer service from them (so far).

The fact that I have a 2 year old son, and the Monolith is downward firing vs the forward firing of the PB-10 made the final clinch for me.

Like many AV things though - it's almost impossible to get a demo of both say the Monolith and PB-10 so one has to go on what can be gleemed from the forums.

With 3 years warranties for both, and they are both superb subs .. you can't really go wrong

Mark.

The PB-10 will be excellent in your room and that and the similarly sounding BK Monolith are the cheapest "real bass" subs that you can buy. I haven't heard the PB12-NSD which is new to the UK market but the PB12-Plus is a step up in quality from the entry level offerings and the difference is audibly superior, even at moderate levels but far more so when cranked up

If that is an improvement on the PB-10 ISD it should be some sub indeed. When it's received and setup please let us have your comments as you'll be one of the first on the forum to hear it.

feedback on PB10-NSD

Due in 3 weeks (or less)
I have bought M&K Tripole rear speakers, and Yamaha 757 ... all waiting in boxes for rest of bits.

Undecided on front & centre ... probably the M&K K5 for L&R and K7 for centre, this will be set up with Panasonic Vierra Plasma & DVD recorder
