You don't want to set the volume adjustment to 100% as this just causes the original sound to just get messed up, unless the original is really really quiet leave this at default as it will reduce quality. Feel free to mess with the equalizer, click on the three vertical bars in the bottom right of itunes to bring up an equalizer. Basically it alters 'on the fly' how much of different frequencies can be heard, so say if you wanted a really bassy sound it could up the low frequencies and reduce the high frequencies. No harm can come form it though as it doesn't actually alter the original file, the best way to see if you want the equalizer on is to try it at different settings (there are presets under those three lines, bass booster etc etc.), this will probably improve the way you hear it. Otherwise the only way to improve the sound you hear would be to get a higher bitrate version of the original file on your computer, other than that the ipod is stuck at its present quality level. The improved headphones you've already got are all you can really do beyond equalizing.
