Hi Mike,

Really like the 1st shot, I assume you have adjusted colours etc? Has a really nice feel to it, though it could do with losing the grass cutter in the background.

Unfortunately, i'm not really into flowers but they are all nice captures.

Not sure which I prefer of the two Cathederal shots, edging towards the first one though :smashin:

Hi Steve,

glad you like the pics, the golf one is kind of a cheat as I added the sky from another shot as the original sky was pure white and really made the photo look bad so I composited the sky in photoshop. The adding of the sky actually helped enhance the colours, only thing I might have done was auto adjust the levels, forgotten already as it took me about 2 hours to learn how to do the sky. I never even noticed the grass cutter when taking the pic as I had to try and hurry and snap the shot before my dad holed his putt, he didn't know I was shooting so I only had a couple of secs to switch the camera on and snap it.

Is there a way of removing the tractor without spoiling the pic, not really any good at Photoshop, I learned how to add the sky via a video tutorial I. downloaded

The flower pics were only taken to try out my Olympus 8080 that I had just picked up S/H.

I have had the 1st Cathedral pic blown up to 30" by 20" via the Photobox June poster offer and it looks superb - only cost £7.49 inc P+P with the offer, highly recommended if you have any pics you would like blown up.

Although the 8080 is a great camera I am already toying with the idea of upgrading it to a 350D or similar to access more lens options, any thoughts?

See ya,

Mike.

Hey Matey,

Really like what you did with the sky on the first pic. Hope you don't mind:confused: I had a go at removing the grasscutter (I personally like it IN the shot:smashin: ).
I simply used the "Clone Stamp Tool" (s) in photoshop fifth down on the left of the tool box. If you are not familiar with this tool, you simply tell the computer what area you want to copy by holding the ALT button on PC or OPTION button on MAC (cursor turns into a target), and clicking the mouse button. Then release the ALT or OPTION button and draw over the area you want to replace.
My attempt took about 10 seconds and you can see where the tree seems to have 2 identical branches where the grasscutter used to be. With a bit more fine tuning and using a smaller brush this could be cleaned up alot more.

Hope this helps

Hi Colin,
ta for the tips and the redone pic, I can't make my mind up whether the tractor in the pic helps or not.

I had a go earlier with the stamper tool before you posted and I think with a little more practice and a steady hand I might get the hang of it.

I use this photo as my desktop and it looks almost 3D on the screen.

Hi,
glad you like it, it is amazing what adding a new sky has done to this pic because it was pretty poor before.

Swithering as to whether to let you see the original and see how much the sky has transformed it.

That ball shot is very good. I like it. I wonder if a crop and rotation to make it even more on the diagonal, like Pete does on alot of his work, might make it even better?

Hi Pete,
loved your last couple sessions that you uploaded.

Glad you like my last shot, it's a pity about the houses in the background but it was just a quick snap whilst everyone was having a kickabout on the grass outside the house.

Hi Gordon,

pleased you like my Wet Balls  it was the colours that struck me when I saw them, all it is 3 of those balls you get for a ball pool for kids in a paddling pool, not set up that's exactly how they were.

I will have a go at your rotation idea, I have a fuller shot available to work on and funnily enough it is, I think, a wee bit better than the the one uploaded here as it shows more of the reflection at the bottom. I cropped it to make it look symmetrical.

Will try and get another one done for you, but don't hold your breath :)

You can meter the shots differently by using the '*' button which can help but the digital sensor is prone to washing out skies when they are cloudy and white. If you had a tripod then you could meter off the sky for one shot and meter off the subject in another then merge the two in PS, but, the best way around it is to use a graduated filter, that will make the original shot much better and cut down on the PS work.

For another fix, try the white balance on different programmed settings and see if that improves it.

There is a thread here (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=370636&highlight=sky) about it :)

Love the 'See me run' picture by the way :smashin:

I took a few shots of cars that we saw in Havana, Cuba last week. Just a pity we had a thunderstorm just before we took most of these, didn't last long but it was enough to kill the sunshine for about 30 minutes.

The first four shots are of working cabs, the last one is a private car, the difference in plate colours is that the blue ones are GOVT owned and yellow plates are private.

Love them.. The color is breathtakingly impressive.. What is your RAW workflow?

Hi,

sorry for taking so long to reply, I must admit I'm a bit of a hit and miss man then it comes to workflow, but I will try and cover what I did with the first 2 shots from Cuba.

Downloaded RAW files into PC using the supplied Canon Software which puts them in ZoomBrowser then convert files into Jpeg using the Raw Image Task Software. With the 1st shots above I just sorted exposure a wee bit, think it was about 1/2 stop over and then set daylight WB and Colour Saturation upped to Mid High. Saved files as 300bit Jpegs into then opened up in Picasa.

In Picasa I slightly cropped both images, then adjusted the Highlights/Shadows and sometimes fill light but not on this occasion. Then one click on Sharpness just to bring out the detail and then Save a Copy ( which unfortunately fairly reduces the files size but its fine for uploading to the web and the various photo Forums I use. ).

This is probably how I handle most if not all of my photos, not sure if it's correct or even the best method, but I just can't get the hang of Photoshop, although it does help if the original photo is a decent on in the first place. A decent pic will obviously a lot less work than trying to bring something out of a crap one.

The colours and cloud definition etc in all of the pics were achieved using a Circular Polarising Filter.

Hope this answers your question and isn't too long winded. I will post pics more later this week when I get the chance.

Glad you like them,

Mike.

Thanks for explaining , I did ask!:)

It works for you which is the main thing:smashin:

Im a bit of a DPP advocate.. I find once you get to grips with it, any further PP in Photshop ..or elements is minimal unless you want to do some Serious enhancing

DPP is great if you have many images taken in similar conditions and you feel the correction on one can be applies to many at once

AI servo for a rabbit shot is not a mistake mate, they can run off in a flash!
Couldn't you have used an ISO of 650 ( or 400?) and still got a good shutter speed ..This may have made you need a larger aperture and less DOF

Hi,

glad you like them, I used 800 as it was pretty dull here yesterday and figured best to go higher and get faster shutter as I seem to try and go too low with the ISO sometimes and waste more shots than I would have if I'd upped the ISO if you know what I mean.

Took these today whilst out with my dad, he knew we were there but wasn't sure what we were so he had a good bark (they do this when they don't know what is after them) and then stopped and I managed to get to a hummock and lean against a tree to get these shots. Unfortunately with it being cloudy they aren't as bright or as sharp as I'd like but probably the best Roe shots I've taken so far.

Hi Senu,

glad you like my album, not really had much time to get out lately but I try and get out once or twice a week.

That biker fell the day before as well at the same place I believe so I think he needs a wee bit more practice at the hairpin

Roe are notoriusly hard to get as they are one of the shyest animals in Britain, easy enough to take photos of them but not easy to get it right and get the full animal in the shot.

Hi Liquid,

thanks for that, always appreciate it when someone like yourself enjoys my photos as I regard your work as highly impressive.

The Roe just wandered into the thicket as I came around a corner in the car on a farm track, only managed 5 shots of it before it 'ghosted' away, the one shown was one of three taken in rapid succession in case it ran off.

Came across a fox later on as well but I spotted us before we saw it and all I got was a 'bum' shot :( as it took off over the brow of a hill.

See ya,

Mike.

Had a shot of my dad's Macro kit yesterday whilst we were out, not easy to catch these little blighters as they are so flighty, they obviously had their minds on other things but it didn't stop them taking off anytime we approached. It was a bit breezy at the time of this shot, probably could have done with less depth and isolated the background more, but unfortunately you don't get much time to compose some of these shots. The other day we headed out to try and get some more shots of the Osprey's my dad had seen, here are some of them. Some are well cropped unfortunately as I only have 400mm of reach, but I don't think they came out too bad. These are the first I have ever seen in the wild. In fact we arrived to see a fisherman catch a nice Pike at the edge of the loch, probably around 5 - 7lb so all in all a great morning.

Well after spending a day trying to improve on my Osprey shots taken the other day we gave up and I headed home, I stopped at a gate to a field overlooking another loch and this Kestrel tried to land on a telephone pole about 30ft from me, opened the car door reached in and grabbed a few shots before he flew along the hedgerow with his/her mate.

We took a run up to the Highland Wildlife Park (http://www.highlandwildlifepark.org/) at Kingussie yesterday, these are some of the shots, unfortunately not the brightest of days, which isn't ideal for the 100-400, but here they are anyway. Everyone had a great time and will definitely make the trip again.

Out early this morning with my dad, he'd beaten me there by about 40 minutes, and when I met up with him he was watching 4 Roe in the same field where he had taken pics last week. Here are some of my shots of a couple of young Bucks as they had a feed. All taken with my 30D and 100-400L IS with differing ISO's to try and get some shutter speed, which varied from 1/60th to 1/250th. After they left my dad headed off and I hung around to see if I could capture anything else.....the list of what I saw is as follows;

Fox (http://mikeyb.smugmug.com/photos/204599790-L.jpg), Heron (http://mikeyb.smugmug.com/photos/204606007-L.jpg), Kingfisher (http://mikeyb.smugmug.com/photos/204604421-L.jpg), Treecreeper (http://mikeyb.smugmug.com/photos/204600797-L.jpg), Buzzard, Kestrel, Bluetit, Robin, Otter, Woodpecker, Squirrel, Geese, Pigeons, Crows, Mallard, Teal, Swans, Curlews, Pipit, Thrush, Blackbird, all before 11am so bit of a wasted early rise really :D

I do..
If I had a comment it would be to crop them up close if it is impossible to get close up shots . The Fox and the kingfisher shots are far too small to be noted as the subject of the shot without you mentioning it
The Green tit and Greatfinch shots got the special treatment :)

Great effort all round :smashin:
You are most definitely getting your moneys worth off the 100-400 and 30D ;)

Hi,

thanks for your comments, cropping is ok in so far as you can only crop so much before losing detail, believe me I would have loved to have cropped the Kingfisher to full frame, however it would just be a blue blob, it was shot at about 70 yards away, plus I wanted to leave in the reflection, the Fox shot was left like that as I really liked the tunnel of trees leading to him with the clearing at the end. Plus I only really added them to the album as I had mentioned seeing all these creatures in the first Roe post, and never having seen a Kingfisher in the flesh before I just had to add him

The Tit and Greenfinch shots are from about 12 feet away so that shows the difference in detail, now if I owned a 500F4L or even 600f4L that would be a different story as they resolve much much more detail than 100-400L :smashin:

Glad you like them, will hopefully get to add more over the winter months.

Mike.

I love your bird shots. I counted well over 60 species of birds over a ten year period at our last house. An isolated rural property with mixed woods, scrubby thorny banks, streams, undrained marsh, ponds, lawns, old fruit trees, bushes and unimproved rough grazing all helped. One couldn't ask for a better situation to attract so many different birds. Many nested there and became quite tame. Lots of mixed cover was the real secret. I wish I'd had a digital camera and even a small fraction of your skills back then.

Thanks for sharing your truly remarkable images.

Hi,

really appreciate that you like my photos, you're not the only one that regrets not having a digi cam previously, my dad was a gamekeeper back in the 70's ( he now only shoots with a camera now too ) and the images we have witnessed are only committed to memory for the most part with only the odd pciture taken at the time. Not many kids get to drive and shoot large bore rifles and shotguns by the time they are 12, well maybe some do these days but you know what I mean ;) Myself and my two brothers spent our teenage years, shooting, fishing etc and living the best years of our lives in the countryside.

I don't regard myself as having any skill in taking these images just reasonable equipment, luck and the right environment I think.

Thanks for bringing some of those memories flooding back, great times.

You are far too modest!

It takes far more than a decent camera to take any of the shots you have captured.

You are right about focal length too. I remember trying to walk up to an owl which was sitting on a garden fence post. It was very patient and put up with me getting quite close before it got bored and flew away. I used up a whole film without getting a single worthwhile shot with my 150mm on my 35mm SLR! :god:

Thankyou for reminding me of my own past. Imagine the delight of finding Goldcrests nesting in the bushes. The tits and warblers in a dozen varieties of each. Yellow and Grey Wagtails on the banks of the stream. Dippers in formal evening wear diving in a wild torrent. Treecreepers corkscrewing on the old apple trees. All without leaving the garden. :)

Keep up the good work. :smashin:

Out with my Dad and Emily again today, but were forced to sit around the car as Emily had fallen asleep, mind you it was a blessing in disguise as we were able to get a look at this little guy/gal happily munching away quite content in the trees near to us.

I was able to shoot these from a bridge about 40 feet away and on the same level. Unfortunately the light was terrible and these are 800 ISO with shutter speeds around 1/400 to 1/1000th in an attempt to get them sharp which wasn't easy as there was a lot of movement. Put it this way at 100 ISO the shutter was about 1/8th to 1/30th - oh for some sun :(

Thanks,

was quite chuffed with these as I thought once seen on PC they would have looked fairly poor, you know what it's like, the small lcd on camera enhances average pics until you get them home and onto your monitor and then :( but sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised. 2 of these have had noiseware on them too to reduce the noise just to see how they compared with the other 2. He/she spent ages with the cones probably because they don't get a lot out of them and have to grind away most of the cones to get to the seeds, whe standing below the tree you could hear the gnawing quite clearly even if you couldn't see the cause of it.

Thanks, the deer were taken out in the open one morning without a hide, Roe Deer are easy enough to get near as long as you stay still and quiet, they can only see in B & W so if you stand/sit still they will come right up to you as long as you are upwind. You will know if they see you and don't know what you are as they will bark at you, but as soon as the they really see you they will just take off.

Glad you like my pics,

Just popped out into the garden yesterday to get some shots done and here are a few that I managed of the Blue Tits that come to my feeders. Once I get more time I might try and clone out the bottom twigs in shots 3 and 4 as I feel they spoil the overall images. No hide this time just stood and waited, all taken with Canon 30D and 100-400L IS @ 400 ISO.

Out to try and catch the Kingfisher today, horrendous light conditions with no sun, early morning fog and frost. Even at ISO 800 I was sometimes only getting 1/80th of a second, at 100 ISO I was getting 1/40th LOL. Still I had to shoot him anyway, apologies for the crap quality, I will try and get him again once we get some sun. The fish out of water shot was taken whilst still on MF so missed the focus on that one. These are pretty severe crops as I was sitting further down the bank from the branch he alighted on as I was trying to hedge my bets and cover 3 or 4 branches near me, in the end he landed on the one I had selected the other day as the most likely DOH!

All Canon 30D 100-400L IS and some with the Kenko 1.4x TC.

But didn't take these until the mist started to clear at about 10:30 am, it was a cold wait on top of East Lomond this morning, but I think/hope it was worth it.

Taken from window upstairs as three of them wandered through the planting just below house, taken at about 40 yards, just a pity about all the branches and long grass in the way, I will need to trim a few bits ;) This is the few shots I've managed in ages, what with wife being ill and needing nursed and no light it's been a pretty boring time of late.

Never seen them in the wild before, not sure where they have come from. Not ringed, but I suppose they could escapee's from somewhere, mind you there are also a pair of unringed White Cheeked Pintails from the Carribean on the loch too. Poor pic but just thought I'd show them, Emily (grandaughter) was able to feed them later on by hand when we went back for a look in the afternoon.

You should post more of these on the main forum - they'll get the audience they deserve :smashin:

Hi Liquid,

how are you, thanks for the praise, I'm really enjoying getting out with the camera, and with my dad now well and truly into it as well is an even bigger bonus.

Never really thought much about putting my pics on the main forum as I would have stuff to add every week and wouldn't want to flood the forum with my pics, plus they are all mostly the same stuff, either wildlife or my grandaughter, but having waited for this page to upload even on my 8mb connection I can see why people don't browse the albums I was thinking about changing them all to clickable thumbs, it would take a bit of work but would save the 56k'ers getting fed up waiting on them uploading they way they are just now.

I might add a few to the main forum just to let people see them as I get great pleasure in people seeing my photo's and hopefully liking them, I still really admire your work and wish I could so landscape shots but I'm hopeless at it, I don't think I have an artistic eye

Aw the best,

Mike.

Hi Senu,

many thanks for the compliments on my photos, I am currently using the Sigma 500mm F4.5 EX (http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/lenses/telephoto/500mm.htm)and unfortunately it doesn't have IS, however I picked it up secondhand for £1550 which compares nicely to the Canon IS version at £3500! I have begun adding a few to the main forum as Steve had mentioned doing the same thing to let more people see my work.

Thanks once again and I'm pleased that you like my photos, it's just one of the hobbies aside from Golf and MTB'ing that gets me out of the house and keeps me sane

Hi,

thanks, nearly all taken with a monopod, although some leant on window sills of car or hut, I have a tripod but no head on it at the moment so I have to use the pod unfortunately, I am after a Manfrotto 393 head for my tripod but funds are tight just now :(.

Close-up of a Blackie from yesterday, close-up was actually unintentional but with my 500mm lens minimum focus is 4m and even at that I can't fit a whole blackbird in so I cropped it a little and this is the result.

Hi,

glad you like it, there is approx 4 inches more on the right but the top line ended just before that so it left a gap on the right edge, I could have cloned a new bit in and left more to the side of the writing, but I wanted the pic as original as possible, this is almost the whole frame as it was on my 50mm F1.4 and I couldn't squeeze any more in ;)
