Reccomend new metal bands for an old rocker please!
Well, decided to get back into my music, trouble is I'm out of touch with the current metal scene. Any of you whipper-snappers out there recomend who is good at the mo. If it helps I was into Scorpions, Accept, Metallica, and 'slightly' older bands like Led Zep, Deep P, get the idea.
Give me some ideas to go look at/listen to.
Cheers

Radio 1 have been playing Wolfmother quite a bit, an Australian rock combo. Their stuff has been described as "Sabbathesque".
Might be worth a try.

Try
High On Fire - Blessed Black Wings (Motorhead meets Metallica)
Trivium-Ascendency (Iron Maiden meets Metallica)
System of A Down -Toxicity (Eastern tinged Metallica)
Tool-Aenima or Lateralus (progressive metallica)
Deftones-White Pony (as above maybe slightly more Faith No more)
Machine Head-Burn My Eyes (industrial Metallica)
Slayer-Reign in Blood, Seasons in the Abyss, South of Heaven (Makes Metallica sound like a pop band, the finest in thrash)
Mastodon-Leviathon (After System of A down its the second band where you have to meet monster vocals, be prepared)
Sixth-The trees are dead (like the above, but more complex time signatures and British too. Drummers dont get more robot than this guy).
Try them out, most will take some time to sink in so do not expect a couple of spins to take them into your heart, more like 6 or 7. Metal has become far more sophisticated these days.
then theres a few older bands that are worth following up
Pearl Jam -Ten(hard rock)
Soundgarden- Badmotorfinger (hard rock)
Alice in Chains-Dirt (hard rock)
Tad-Inhaler (iron Maiden meets Sabbath)
The Melvins-Houdini (slow Sabbath style)
Nirvana -Nevermind (Im guessing you do know this one, otherwise where have you been for the last 10 years??)

Three Inches Of Blood - Thrashy metal with an eighties feel to it. Dual vocals, one gruff and one high pitched. I would have thought being a fan of Accept and Metallica (two bands I loved in the 80's) this would be up your street as it's a bit like a cross between the two.
EDIT: I just stumbled across this:
The best way to describe 3 Inches of Blood is "reverential" - essentially, take everything great about heavy music before 1985, and go from there. Which means the shrieking vocal assault of Rob Halford, the epic guitars and storytelling of Iron Maiden, the pirate theme of Running Wild, and, most importantly, the lasting influence of the British New Wave of Heavy Metal. 3 Inches of Blood is a band that knows their Diamond Head from their Motorhead.
"That's definitely our biggest influence, the late 70's British stuff," says one of 3 Inches' two singers, Jamie Hooper. "And also bands that were influenced by those U.K. bands, like early Slayer, and Ride the Lightning-era Metallica." On the other hand, singer Cam Pipes asserts, "3 Inches of Blood are influenced by barley, hops, yeast, and water and heavy metal!"
You can hear them here: http://flashenhanced.com/3iob/3iob.htm

Wolfmother - I only just heard them the other day but I'm sure this album is a must for old Led Zep/Sabbath fans that are looking for something with a more direct influence than a lot of the curent bands.
I can't say I'm much of a fan of the bands on Karkus30's list except for Tad who were a great if underated band. I would personally go for an album called '8 Way Santa' though. Slayer are of course also fantastic but I would assume you remember them from back in the day if you remember Metallica from then.

If you fancy something slightly off the beaten track, try Beatallica (Metallica meets the Beatles). Free mp3 downloads from their website

Speaking as a fellow Deep Purple/Led Zep/Sabs nut (I have over 50 DP CD's alone !), I'd recommend
Tool - Lateralus and Aenima are outstanding.
Clutch - Pure Rock Fury - does exactly what it says on the tin !

Good call with Clutch. I suppose we should also add Primus, Helmet and Pantera and for afters how about The Black Crows.
Just as an added comment, these albums do not necessarily represent my tastes in music, they are just suggestions which revolve around the subject of the thread and may be worth a listen.

Check out a new band from Ireland by the name of The Answer. I'm not gonna pigeon-hole them as there are a lot of influences in their music, but they have a great 70's rock sound, think Burn-era Deep Purple and Led Zep. There's also a good new brit band called Roadstar (used to be called Hurricane Party). Great energetic band. The whole music scene is in a bit of a stale rut at the moment, IMO, hence all the great 80's bands, Poison, Journey, Cinderella, Queensryche, Anthrax are touring and are a lot more fun to watch and listen too than all this modern neo-thrash stuff! Why not check out Classic Rock magazine for a quick snifter on what is happening in the rock world.

As mentioned before, you should definitely check out Tool (Ænima, Lateralus probably easiest to get into) and System of a Down (I loved the recent Mesmerize album).
Also check out Devin Townsend and his various bands; Strapping Young Lad (very hard & thrashy), Ocean Machine (more chilled with big riffs), Infinity (bit experimental) and various under just Devin Townsend. Started out with Steve Vai way back, now very good, very tight/precise timing, amazing dynamics to his vocals. Brilliant live!
Velvet Revolver and the album Contraband ain't too bad: GnR minus Axle and with LA Guns bloke on vocals. Harking back to '80s metal, but not sounding jaded.
The whole stoner-metal scene was pretty good for spaced out big dirty guitar riffs, covering the likes of Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age (before they went too Indie), Clutch, Unida, Monster Magnet (get 'Dopes To Infinity') etc.
Also check out some of the stuff that crossed over into the Industrial scene (or even just the less electronic stuff in the industrial scene), like Fear Factory, White Zombie/Rob Zombie, Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy ('Greater Right of the Wrong' good to get into), KMFDM, Rammstein, Die Krupps, Ministry (can't beat 'Psalm 69')

Chris Cornell's solo stuff like 'Euphoria Morning' was good too.

I'll also suggest Tool - As well as the 2 albums already mentioned, 'Undertow' may be a good bet. Shorter songs with more straightforward structures and therefore (arguably) easier to get into than the later releases.
Faith No More - The Real Thing (contains a great cover of War Pigs), and Angel Dust.
Ok, these are hardly recent (early 90's) but are worth owning IMO.
