Cool Marantz DV 9600 question about Kris Deering's Secret's Review?????

Hi Everyone,

I have the Marantz DV 9600 and the question I would like to ask is why did Kris Deering in his Secrets review of the Marantz DV9600 DVD benchmark say that In SA-CD one has to go from DSD to PCM???

I listen to SA-CD in Multi-Channel so why would I have to go from DSD to PCM . Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the ByPass mode ,and have a perfect DSD sounding SA-CD CD down graded to a normal PCM sound. Can anyone explain what Kris Deering here is saying below:

"The audio section of the DV9600 is excellent, with full support of both high resolution formats and full bass management as well as time alignment for both. SACD does require conversion to PCM though for time alignment, but in our opinion it is well worth it. "

The other comment Kris Derering said was the Matrantz has full bass management. I have the Dv 9600 ,and I couldn't find in the whole manual or in OSD or my remote anything to do with bass management either in DVD-A or SA-CD??? What is this bass management he is talking about??? Bass management can only be done with my Processor ,so what is Kris talking about when he says bass management on the Marantz DV9600?????

Can anyone out there expalin this to me please!!!
Thanks in advance,

Cheers,
Chinets

I think that all good SA-CD players have onboard bass (and time delay etc) management. How else would you control the multi-channel sound since the processing is done in the player and the sound is outputted via analog connections to the receiver/amplifier/processor?

If the player supports transfering of digital sound via HDMI/iLink/firewire/toslink/coax then it would be converted to analog outside of the player. But that hasn't been the case before atleast, but maybe now it's possible for SA-CD...

Kind regards,
Tommy

Chinets,

I think along the same line as Tommy.
As far as I know every DVD-Audio and/or SACD player has bass management on board as well as a time delay management [because of different distance of the speakers] because if the player nor the receiver have a HDMI-interface the output in DVD-A or SACD from the player must be analogue to have effect. In that case the receiver just receives the signals and amplifies them without giving the possiblity of bass managment or time delay management.
That at least I understood from my Toshiba SD-9500.

Interesting what you quote about the PCM-conversion. From the description of a DVD-player I'm interested in I quote:
'The digital audio transmission is unique, too. At first, DSD data is converted into PCM data, then processed and decoupled by Audionet's Intelligent Sampling technology to be routed to a powerful output transmitter via a low-jitter LVDS data link non-sensitive to interference. Using Audionet's proprietary HighBit interface, all two channel data up to 192kHz or multi-channel data with up to 96kHz per channel is transmitted. The LowBit mode offers data rates up to 96kHz/24bits. Both modes offer the best possible PCM output data – independently from the initial data format, especially for SACD, two and multi-channel.'

The interesting thing is: in your quote the PCM-conversion is presented as a necessary evil, in my quote it is presented as an advantage.
Who has an explantation?

Regards, Jürgen

Any need to convert can introduce errors digitally which if there are enough of them can compromise the signal. However there is an assertion by Chinets that converson to PCM is bad. If it is done well, and with the minimum of errors there is no reason why it should be a bad thing. If the listening experience is a good one, perhaps you should worry less about the technology and concentrate more on a pleasing listening experience. I presume you are happy with the 9600?

Angry Very Confused Now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys,
Yes, I am very Happy with the DV 9600.
I have the Time delay management on my set up for the DV9600 ,but can't find the Bass management on it, or is this the same thing?. I am confused here I have the Marantz connected by 6 analog connections to my Pre/Pro ,and have the optical connection for the Video part!! I have no i-Link connection or HDMI connection done as I opted for the 6 Analog connection instead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When Cable Monkey says " Do the PCM well with minimum of errors and listening experience is good" It's like chinese to me What do you mean by a good listening or if you do it right?. All I do is switch the set up to PCM and Analog and that's it ,so how difficult is that??? I am confused here ,as I am sure you mean something technical which I am not grasping at all. Switching a button is not what you meant?? So What is it???
I am totally confused now!! More than when I put this thread up!!!!
Can anyone help an amateur here,
Thanks In advance,
Cheers,
Chinets
