June 9, 2006 - Sony's PlayStation 3 has had rough going in the press lately. Earlier this week the PS3 was lovingly defended by developers after being accused of being "hobbled" and "broken."

Today, thegadget weblog Gizmodo caught the fact that the Sony Style webstore stealthfully changed the projected release date of its first Blu-ray player from June 25 to "on or about August 15, 2006."

Tuesday IGN reported that Pioneer announced it was delaying the release of its Blu-ray player until Fall of 2006 citing "a delay in the development process."

sigh..

SONY's bluray player delayed two months. Sony isn't the format, and the format isn't Sony.

AFAIK the Samsung player is still due out this month in the US

What software is supported today to build a HTPC with BD drive?

PowerDVD and WinDVD I think are ready to play Blu Ray movies - but remember that most video cards still don't properly support HDCP. So you'll need to upgrade the video card when they decide to turn the Image Constraint Token on.

Seriously, whoever thought of HDCP should be given the electric chair.

If you look at the Toshiba they use the Broadcom chip for H.264 and MPEG2, are there available solutions to do it with standard PC components?

Is it enough with a powerfull CPU and graphics board like Nvidia/ATI?

That's the drive, but I don't recommend you buy anything from Overclockers (I do not intend that comment to be slander and can back it up if required).

Sadly you're right - the companies have been incredibly deceptive and the current versions of software players CANNOT play HD-DVD or Blu-Ray movies despite their press releases' clever wording so we're sending the drive back as the price will have dropped by the time it's of more use.

Guess we have to wait til September for the real set top players huh?

for the record i bought lots of stuff from overclockers and had no issues, but as expected with the no playing using power dvd no reason why it would work, this drive is being marketed as a 25gb backup device more than to play movies
