Changing fan in Toshiba Hd dvd player.

Hi
I recently got my hands on one of these and what a picture it gives out. The only slight problem that I have is that because of the room layout I sit about 3 feet from the player which makes the fan blower unit inside quite audible.
I have built my own Htpc which I have made nearly silent so I have some ideas but I was hoping that someone else with greater knowledge might be able to help as this is basically a pc as well. As you can see in the photo the cpu is cooled by a cooper heatsink which is then run to in front of the blower which is also helped by the rear fan to expel the hot air. What I am wondering is could I change the blower for a more silent one or maybe replace it with another type of fan.

I'm guessing space is an issue here since they've used a flat-design cooling fan.

You could always try making a small tunnel that extends from the rear fan and covers the rear of the copper H/S...then disable the CPU fan...you would probably need to remove the CPU fan to open up the rear of the H/S. That way all the air drawn from the rear fan would be drawn over the CPU H/S.

Only problem is that it limits how much air is drawn from the system.

Which fan is most noisy?

Hi
Thank you for your reply. The noisest fan of the 2 is the flat blower one. The rear fan is something I can replace with a silent pc one if needed. The cpu under the heatsink is a pentiumn 2.5gh chip but if I did remove the blower fan and put a silent fan on the rear at full speed do you think it woulld suck out enough hot air?.
Thanks

If it was tunnelled, yes I don't see why it wouldn't be sufficient, but of course you'd have to test temps and stability.

Now bear with me with this one. I take the blower fan unit out and remove the fan completely. i then put the blower unit back in and stick either an 80 or a 120mm fan on top blowing into the blower unit so air is still blowing through the blower onto the heatsink. Anyone think that this would work?

Thanks

Are there vent holes on the top of the case?

Hi
No vent holes on the top or side of the case.

Ok I have had a look inside and I think I am stuffed. I can confirm that all the noise is coming from the flat blow fan and that the rear exhaust fan is silent. I checked this out by disconnecting the blow fan and with the rear exhaust fan running everything was silent. The problem is where the blow fan connects to the motherboard because the white plug is about half the size of a standard pc fan plug. This is a shame as I am sure that my idea of taking the fan out of the blow fan unit and then placing a 80 or 120mm fan on top of the blow fan unit with maybe a funnel would have done the trick.

Hi
Well I done some more digging and have found out that the flat blower fan is the same unit that toshiba put in some of their laptops. Its rated at 5v 300 mA hence the small plug. Now if I am correct what I need now is maybe a 70-80mm quite fan that runs at 5 volts which I have found but I am not sure what the 300 mA rating means so if somebody could let me know this measurement compared to a single amp is please. I was worried about maybe burning out the motherboard fan socket by using a slightly bigger fan but is it not the case that the socket will only give out 5 volts and it will be up to the fan to decide whether it can start and run at 5 volts. I want to thank the people who have helped me so far and any suggestion will be welcome.

Thanks
