AVR 4306 Network audio

I have a small but for me important question. I assume that the network feature on these new Denon's work in one of the following ways.

1.It let my me access my network folders via on screen display using the remote.
2.I can stream audio from any PC in my network to the receiver in the same way an Apple Airport works.

Which of these two is it?

I think it's option 2 - however be aware that the 2807 doesn't have this feature - since it doesn't have any network connectivity at all.

Er no - I've got one.....the RS232 thing is for homeautomation stuff - nothing to do with network connectivity for musuic playback - copy and paste from your link gives :-

AVR-2807

$1,099.00

The AVR-2807 is Denon's latest addition to their group of versatile A/V surround receivers. The AVR-2807 incorporates all the current surround formats and enhanced installation flexibility, all with great simplicity of setup and operation.

The AVR-2807 provides Auto Set-Up and Room EQ by Audyssey, which helps you achieve optimized system performance for your specific room. With the accompanying microphone placed at up to six listening positions, the powerful new 32 bit floating point DSP automatically and accurately analyzes, adjusts, and sets the speaker configurations of your system. In addition, Pure Direct mode was designed for those who want the ultimate in sonic quality by shutting down all unused circuitry for the cleanest and most precise stereo sound from any audio component in your system.

We do not want to forget to mention a host of other key features – including multi-zone audio capabilities, two assignable 12 volt “trigger” outputs, an RS-232 port for computer-controlled touch screen operation, 200ms audio delay for precise synchronization between image and soundtrack, a dedicated iPod connectivity port, 1080p HDMI switching, and an XM Satellite Radio Ready port which accepts an optional "Connect and Play' antenna.

If you are searching for a receiver to be the center piece and control of an elaborate A/V system, the AVR-2807 undoubtedly assures you the never-before-experienced high quality for which you have been searching.

And there's no 'tick' symbol next to the line :-

"RJ-45 Ethernet Port – Same Functionality as AVR-5805/4806"

and that's because it hasn't got it!!!!

As far as I'm aware it'll still be option 2.

When I first heard of this feature I thought the 2nd option would be most logical and useful. However I've read a review the other day. It said that the reviewer had to install MS media connect so that folders can be shared with Denon. This sounds like option one to me...

Maybe this is because I have no idea what Apple Airport is...

I'm assuming it's a package sitting on the Mac - like Media Connect will be sitting on the PC - providing access to shared audio files.

Perhaps a 4306 owner could enlighten us further...

Apple Airport is a a wireless router which in edition has an usb port for connecting a printer (in order to obtain a network printer) and an audio output. When playing Itunes you can select playing the audio local ór remote. Remote means the audio is streamed (wireless)to the airport which is connected to the receiver.

If the Denon also functions this way it means that i can take my laptop, use my favourite audioplayer and stream music directly and wireless to the receiver.

Options 1 means I have to turn on my TV (150 watt's) being able to listen music. Not to mention the on-screen display has not the same functionality as a good audioplayer.

I've looked into the manual of the Denon and it seems it's option one

Yes you have to install Windows Media connect on you PC and this shares the folder you specify with the 4306. You can then just dial up with the remote which mps you want to listen to. You will be dissapointed with the user interface on the Denon though. And for the life of my I can't understand why they didn;t make it fully compliant with media connect ie you can only listen to sounds. But when you have an amp with video capability they shoould have made it so you could view movie clips and photos as well

I have to agree with NigelR800 on this. There's not even any point having the screen turned on, I prefer to just use the display on the amp to navigate to whatever tunes I'm looking for
