It works but it's bloody slow.

It copies the DVD to a VCD file that fit's on a CD-R. On my Pentium III with 256 of RAM it took 22 hours !

How can the quality match DVD like they claim? That must be an utter lie.

Why not try DVDExtractor for the Mac for 'backing up' DVD's. This allows you to make an image of the original and you can burn it to a DVD using toast. This is fine for single layer disks and takes about an hour from launching DVDExtractor to ejecting the finished DVD, you then obviously have an exact copy of the original with menus etc intact. DVD-R blank media has really come down in price, £1 to £2.

I've heard dup-dvd is good and very simple to use.

Looks to me like it will use DIVX, which I believe is MPEG4, with an MP3 audio compression. Don't hold out much hope of being able to play these on a stand alone DVD player though. Far better quality than VCD, but not quite as good as DVD.
