Many people have spoken of using a NAS server attached to a wireless router to store MP3 files for use on MP3 distributors like Sonos or Squeezeboxes.

Not being the most technically astute, can I ask if the server has to have the words NAS? I ask as some products market themselves as standalone mini servers that attach to the router for file distribution but make no mention of NAS (eg Buffalo's HS-D400GL)

Cheers,

NAS really means Network Attached Storage - more a term from enterprise than anything. It doesn't mean much I think with regard to Buffalo etc - it is just marketing.

I have a Linkstation running Itunes serving my Roku Soundbridge.

Thought as much...

The main thing to check is that the unit has a network connection (ethernet) , and also that it doesnt require any software to be installed. In other words, it has to be a completely self contained unit to work correctly. Buffalo offer a good range with a good balance of price versus performance.

hope that helps

It's certainly good to read, as I'm waiting for delivery of my new buffalo server ordered yesterday!
