Hello all.
Im having a little problem. I have watched, so far
Swordfish (a little glitch near the end, sound went out of sync!?!)
Last Samurai (a little glitch half way, layer change??)
Training Day (Perfect play!)
Doom (almost perfect play)
Serenity (glitched had to go back to previous chapter, fine from then on)
Jarhead - oh dear god! 20 mins it brokeup, froze, then speeded up, played normal speed without sound! Then locked up. Went back a chapter did exact same place, it got thru it, only to do it again at 40mins ish and 50mins (the capt is talking in the tent with pic of the kid). GAVE UP.
Assault On Precinct 13 - wow! did something very similar. Infact just now, ive tried to play it from chapter 9, about where it went wrong, and it has taken 12 mins to play it and its still jumping, then freezing.
I daren't watch any other Universal titles. I also have U571, Bourne Supremacy, Cinderella Man & Apollo 13. On Warner Bros, Goodfellas, Blazing Saddles and many more.
ANY IDEAS?? Could HDMI be a factor??? I have a G series Sharp LCD 37" with DVI. Its the one before the "Titanium" was released. About 2 years old.
Or is my player fooked. Already?
Any nice people here try out on their HD-A1, if i send and a SAE my copy of Assault and Jarhead???

sounds like a player issue which is a pain in the ass on an import

Do you think maybe the power converter may be an issue?

Looks like a faulty player to me.

M8 Some guys over on AVS claim that a lens cleaning DVD?? has solved similar issues. Maybe worth a try if you know what this is.

The fact that so many dvds are struggling would seem to suggest the player.
However, I had my first freeze ups with Van Helsing last night - after my first four played seamlessly. It took me five attempts at cleaning the disc before it played flawlessly.
As Avi suggests, a dvd cleaner may be the solution. I'm going to order myself one in from the States after last night's problems as I guess we'll need an NTSC version in order to get it to play.

Could HDMI be a factor???
Have you tried watching these films using component?
I've had a few problems one freeze but mainly HDMI ERRORS.Hopefully there will be a firmware to sort these out soon.:(
I've changed over from using HDMI to component now as im fed up with problems.Set player up on another HDMI set and works a treat just seem to be with sagem.Using sagem and player with component now and no problems at all and picture quality looks the same.

I have quite a few titles now and a few have glitched but were fine after cleaning, the one exception is Jarhead which froze and Unforgiven which was scratched becuase the box broke in transit.

The HD-DVD's themselves are spotless... So may just try the lens cleaner - see what happens.

Mmm. Tried the Lens Cleaner. Assault started at chapter 9 very very quickly. Soon went wrong just after chapter 10, about 53 mins.
Then i tried the component output. Didnt work. Looks like I have one fooked player. Damn it.
Whats the difference between the HD-A1 and X-A1? Is the X-A1 more powerful, like chip, ram etc wise..??
I don't know if this is relevant but I have had three Toshiba Standard DVd players in the last four years. The first was an expensive model which refused to play many DVD's regarless of being cleaned. The Second machine is a SD-150 I bought on Christmas eve last year for £36 after a month or so it froze when playing any disc. Toshiba replaced it. Watched a History 0f Violence last weekend and it froze numerous times. This is on the replacement machine from Toshiba. Maybe I have had bad luck with Toshiba DVD players but there does seem to be a tolerance issue with them. It would make me think twice before buying an HD-DVD player from them especially an imported one.

$299 lol - They share the same components and output options are the same. The differences are;
1) Case design with bigger rubber feet
2) Motorised drop down front flap
3) RS232 port for central remote control
4) Illuminated motion activated remote
The video and sound procerssing capbilities are the same on both model. BTW I believe A1/D1 stock availability is freeing up in the US following recent shipments.

This is far from a perfect technology - very early days - welcome to the early adopters club, you are hereby an unpaid bug fixer for Toshiba.
