I'm afraid they are going to be mainly bird photos to start with as I'm playing around with the new Sigma 70-300 zoom lens. All these first few are taken using sport mode and not altered in photoshop as of yet. I might be tempted to play around at a later date :)

First we have a couple of Coot chicks, now you know where the phrase as bald as a coot comes from !

Now a Canada Goose sticking it's tongue out at me ;)

I'm still trying to get to grips with birds in flight, but quite pleased with this one.

I'm trying to do bird shots that are a little different to the normal full body shots.

Some great pics there John.

Another friendly Canada Goose

Didn't know there were any friendly ones? I certainly don't recall the ones at Clumber Park when I was a kid being friendly anyway.

3 more from a previous batch earlier this month, one showing young Canada Geese chicks and the other 2 a swan with a young one on it's back.

Some really nice shots there John. I like the idea of the change in composition and that shot works well :smashin: You caught that swan a treat too :)

Nice shots John, took some of a pair of Black Swans the other day, will put them in my thread sometime.

Particularly impressed with the sharpness of the swan taking off

It does show what good value the Sigma lens is, there's no image stabilisation and all the photos I've taken have been handheld so far as they've all been taken whilst out walking and it wouldn't really be convenient to take a tripod.

A sad update, all 6 of the Swan chicks are dead, a farmer let all his cattle into the field where they were (he said he didn't know they were there) and the signets were trampled to death by the cattle :(

I didn't quite get this one as good as I'd liked to have done, but it shows you what great fliers they are, this bird was flying barely 1 foot off the ground.

I don't know John, I think it's a very good. Not being quite as sharp as you'd normally like really adds to the overall impact of this shot

I've been trying recently to get more unusual shots of birds, and trying to be a little more artistic.

The last few trips to the lake I've been trying to concentrate more on the water and background colours than on the main subject.

I agree with some others, the later shots, especially the swan with its head in that so colourful water are fantastic.

Hi JohnG

Very nice set off shots. Really like the butterflies ones. As for the 2nd one what detail in the wing, is he still flying or has he stopped somehow.

Cheers Holo:smashin: :smashin:

Cheers :)
All the butterflies were perched on something which makes life easy ! The tricky part is following them around until they stop and then getting the photos before they fy off again - believe me I had to take quite a lot just to get a dozen "keepers"

A Ruddy Duck performs !

This little chap strutts around making strange noises as part of his display. I was lucky enough to see this the other week. First of all he creates ripples in the water around himself, then bubbles start appearing (the mind boggles!) and then he shoots across the surface of the water at high speed for a couple of yards before stopping dead still and doing another little pose :)
