Electronics, copmuters, circuitry and general order and systems have always fascinated me.

Over the past year or so I've learnt a lot about PC hardware (although still want to learn far more about it and system coding, etc.) - and I'd really like to understand about the actual workings of AV equipment, starting with CRT TVs and their inner workings and oving onto VCRs, hifis, DVD players, monitors if they're any different to CRT TVs - LCD panels, and so on. I'm wondering what the best way is to get into it?

I would go down the study route but I'm a philosophy student and that is my first love, but I'd love to enrich myself through general knowledge. I've got an old colour telly in the garage, maybe I could take it apart and look at a website that explains things and twiddle around with it?

Any ideas guys? o_0

In Australia there is a company called Jaycar, they sell electronic kits with instructions to make all sorts of things including amps.
Speakers are quite easy electronicly to make and a very rewarding hobby.
There are heaps of books available on the subject and possibly clubs in your area plus short coarses to take.
www.diyAudio.com is a site worth looking at and full of very helpfull people

Like most things you have to want it enough to make it happen.
cheers

That 'making 'speakers' idea is really interesting - anyone know of similar things for video stuff too?

DIY radios are an easy thing to pick up as well I imagine. I'll defiately look in at my library to see about AV systems, cheers.
