Very Quiet toshiba rd-xs34sb dvd player HELP

I have a toshiba rd-xs34sb dvd connected to a toshiba 37wp56lp lcd tele.
I think!, ive connected it properly. Normal tele viewing through sky volume level
around 18, but when i watch a dvd i have to put volume up to 34-40 to get any
decent sound, and then it sounds a little distorted.

Has anyone had this problem, is there a simple cable in the wrong place or button to push or is it just the big nut behind the remote.

I have a similar prob with a sony DVD recorder and a Toshiba TV always having to alter the volume for differing sources. Sometimes you can alter the volume line levels in and out on either the TV or DVD recorder, search through all those sub menus and look for volume out. My digi box has one that you can adjust.
