CRT/DVD Unit - Selective Playback

Not sure if this is the right forum to put this in, so apologies if not!

We bought the kids a cheap Hikona TC1400 CRT/DVD 14 inch TV a while back (18 months or so) but just recently the DVD player has developed an annoying habit of selective playback! Some discs notably Warner Bros, Disney and a few others just won't play whereas some discs will play perfectly and without a problem. The ones that don't play will either cause the player to click and whirr for ages and then stop with "No Disc" displayed or they will just click and whirr and then stop with no display.

Has anyone got any clues, is this likely to be failing hardware?

If we have to get a replacement what's good that is multi region out of the box?

Cheers

Marty
