Is it worth buying SACD discs now or will I only be able to play the CD (stereo) layer on a Blu-Ray player?

Depends on what Bluray player you get, AFAIK there are not any SACD supporting BR players announced yet but I would guess the likes of Denon will probably release one eventually.

I guess if anyone is going to include SACD in a Blu-ray player it will be Sony.

PS3 will support it apparently

evidently Sony is courting music labels to start making BD-Audio discs. This perhaps maybe why sony is happy not to rush the blu-ray group to support SACD. Sony wants blu-ray used for everything, so looks like they may phase out SACD in favour of an all new BD-Audio format...it would make sense from a cost front and more so as SACD is a dead duck.

PS3 & SACD is a bizarre combination.

Not on their BDP-S1 player - it doesn't even play CDs. I believe Philips' Blu-ray player shown at CES had an SACD logo on it.

I'd wait and see what Pioneer do

Onkyo might have a suitable player up their sleeves too. It is actually a requirement that SACD players play CDs too.

Unfortunately, Pioneer's announced model doesn't play either CDs or SACDs. They've even dropped iLink.

Yeah, I'm hoping Pioneer bring back I-Link in gen 2. I-Link is better for audio than anything HDMI can offer right now.

I don't think I would every buy a Philips player. Many of their DVD recorders had problems, & I think their DVD players have some issues IIRC. I would buy one of their TV's tho.

Hello

today i read this

A particular focus for Sony this year is the scheduled launch of PlayStation 3 in November, which will feature Super Audio -CD playback. Currently, more than 13 million Super Audio CD compatible players are in circulation worldwide and this figure will grow exponentially once the first Super Audio CD compatible PlayStation systems become available.
