View Full Version : will sony dav s500 play all dvd's or is it tempremental ??
Hello all sony dav s500 owners..
Ive been told that the sony dav s500 is a bit choosy when deciding what it will play.. (as opposed to the pioneer dcs100)
Can you please let me know of your experiences please.
mainly interested in dvd's.
Also, where did you obtain yours from, was it muilti-region?

I have no problems with mine, though I only play region 2 dvds in mine. I think they can be chipped for multi region use.

No problems with mine on Region 1 or 2. Played VCDs/CDRs without problems also.
It's a bit choosy with music CDs sometimes if they're not cleaned properly (ie give your old ones a good wipe!)
Came from unbeatable.co.uk chipped for multiregion and was about £500.

Sony DAVS-500 will play DVD/VCD/CD but not CDR/CDRW.
Otherwise a good player for the price.

Mine does seem able to play CDRs but that's maybe something to do with it being chipped.

I had an early 500 and it would not play a lot of CDs - DVDs were fine.
Seems like they had a problem with a batch of lasers that could not pick up the multi-layers or something. Had it replaced and new one plays all discs fine.:)

Hi,
I recently bought an S500 in March - fully Multi-regional and cost £458 inc. delivery from www.premieraudiocentre.co.uk.
I love it and i've never had a single problem with any media format i've tried (DVD, CD, VCD, SACD, CDR/RW)
Get one now!! :grin: (and it's got a beautiful remote!!)

Unlike earlier Sony models, the DAV seems ok with this. Only issue to be aware of if you are going multi-region is that the DAV doesn't have a scart output. So, if your tv is not NTSC compatible, you will not be able to play R1 titles correctly.

My old man has a davs-500, recently i swapped the video connections for a IXOS s video, all was well until he played one of his bollywood (indian) movies. Though his films worked when swapped back to video connections.
My R2 films were fine, the player is not modified, the only thing i can think of is that his bolly films are of the NTSC format and my R2 are PAL, is there some prob with this? If so how do i get round it?

Shouldn't be a problem with NTSC or s-video. If there was a problem with NTSC it would happen with s-video and composite. Only RGB would give you a clear picture.
Although, from the way you explain it, it appears that that going back to composite (the worst video option) does clear it up.
Can you explain what the picture looks like when it is playing up?

Yes on composite video there is a clear picture, when the s-video is connected the ntsc discs switch between colour and b&w and start getting interferance. The weird thing is that even when the disc is not playing,but sitting in the disc tray, it still interferes with Sony screen!
As I've said there are no problems when using s-video on R2 PAL discs.

I finally opted for a separates system the Pioneer, a few people are selling the dvd444 + amp + speakers, as a packaged separates system.. from dvdmagic.net (nice people)
