Still on night shift mode
You've done a good job adjusting the levels. They're not in the least over processed imo :)
Damn your thread title had me wondering what biscuits you were after sharing :(
Nice set of photo's, like the reflection shots particularly, you know for a fact the majority of people will never even notice them as they walk past

Superb pictures, I have some different angles of some of them:smashin:
did you go on the wheel ?
Biscuit761
05-05-2006, 11:27 PM
Caretaker, it was your shots that inspired me with these.
Went to the Symphony Hall to see a symphony (what else) and had seen your pictures a day or so before, I am in deepest Suffolk and hadn't been to Brum for years, drove round the corner to the car park and there was this massive great wheel in front of me. Realised I had seen it somewhere before and had to have a go at replicating them myself.
Unfortunately the sky was grey but think it gives the pictures a bit of edge.
All taken hand held with my Panny FZ20.

Have been having a play with Photoshop - you may think that I have been wasting my time !
Original

Radically modified
Removed - I am so embarrased by this terrible bit of Photoshop - put it up late at night - regretted it ever since !
As I said, should I have bothered !

Yep should have stuck to the originals  never found a single use for those ridiculous effects we pay a fortune for in editing suites yep.
Wonderful original shots though mate, extremely jealous. especially of the outstanding sharpness.

fantastic shots again bill with the FZ20,what settings did you use ? and did you do any photoshop work on them.
Biscuit761
17-05-2006, 11:29 PM
Beachy, all the recent stuff was produced on fully automatic settings, the magpie pictures were cropped to get closer to the action but because I always shoot at maximum jpeg resolution the image I am left with still needs to be reduced to fit the 800 pixel rule.
Mainly now use the unsharpen mask, contrast and brightness controls from photoshop, occaisionaly fiddle with a few other settings but normally try to get most natural shot possible.
Thanks to everyone for your encouraging comments, this site has made me much more aware of photography in all its elements, composition, what can be achieved with messing about with exposures and also presentation.
The competition element is also great fun, can not wait for voting time !

If you haven't you must go, Lake Garda in northern Italy is about 30 miles long x 4 miles wide, it is surrounded on both sides and one end by mountains and is a superb holiday location.

lots of photos, not sure where to start!
That first symphony hall photo is great, but you could have cropped out the signpost to focus more on the building/reflection.
The alternative weather photo is really good too. Really creates a mood and says 'weather' to me almost as much as your eventual entry.
Really like the overhead of the white flower (is it on your pond?), and that wheat/grass on the coast - that one is very evocative, I can almost smell the sea.
The car ones are good too, but too many pans IMO. Next time (free tickets  ) try and get some head-ons or a group coming through a corner.
Pleasantly surprised at the DOF separation you got in those fenceposts with that camera. Very nice.

Nice ride ( ) BTW
I would try a better background though ,.this one seems a little "industrial" and paradoxically takes attention away from the car ( ie: thoughts of "where was it taken??" looks like outside of the Makro car park)

Was my birthday today, Janet said I could do what I wanted, which was - take pictures !
Went down by the River Stour and snapped away at Dragonflies, first is full frame, second is a tight crop that still needed shrinking to get within limits

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Biscuit761/Dragonfly-1.jpg

Then after seeing Bristol Pete's sports shots I thought I would have a go, Sudbury Town were playing Coggeshall (a nearby village) at cricket, problem with this game is that you have to sit so far away. Still shoot at largest size then crop certainly does the job. Sudbury (who are batting in these) won.

Absolutly fantastic shots, and a good variety of, well, everything.
I still dont get how you capture cars moving clearly and the background blurred, or how to get so close to insects without them moving or whilst flying.
It's shots like these that inspire me to carry on trying
Then I have only just started with a canon A610, and havent really 'got out there' yet. I'm certainly not brave enough to go up to a stranger and ask them If I could take a picture
Truely some great work, I can't wait to see more

Those close ups would not be out of place in Nature and National Geographic Magazine!
You are using macro to good effect but even the non macro seaside shots are very easy on the eye. The panoramic shot is also well done.
No more shots of your "Pride and joy" then? ( the Porsche:) )

Senu, thanks for your kind words, all I really do for macro shots is turn the dial to the right setting, shove the camera as close as the insect will allow and let the electronics do the rest.
I always shoot in the highest Jpeg option the FZ20 will allow and then am able to get good images even from a tight crop, all these have had to be shrunk to fit the 800 pixel rule.
I generally take loads of pictures when I am out and edit down to just a few good ones. Am still thinking about a DSLR as I am not convinced by the ultimate quality of picture you can get from a 6mm wide CCD as compared to a 24mm wide sensor in a DSLR.
Thanks again

Some really nice shots there Bill. These are the sorts of photos that really help you remember your hols - better than just distant landscapes. I like the out of focus one too - and the chillies - and quite a few others too. A few look a bit over-saturated to me but maybe it's my monitor.
Keep up the good work.

Was upping the contrast a bit to get richer colours. Use a skylight filter all the time now (unless the polariser is on) and I am not sure that it does not hve a detrimental effect on the colour saturation, even with manual white balance.
I'll add a few more while a window is open.

Hi there
Just look at this entire post, all I can say is there some brilliant stuff here. Another thing is you do get around a bit.
Love the holiday pictures and the insect pictures you have given me a few ideas.

For some reason I am still not taking many shots with the D50 that I think are worth posting, perhaps it is the time of year. Here are a few from the last few days

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Biscuit761/Sunrise-4-1-7-b.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Biscuit761/Smokeing-Chimeny.jpg
Long exposure on a local stack sending out loads of smoke, turned orange by the lights at night.
Finally the roof of our local church, taken during a concert at which I may have made some contacts. Took photo's during the concert but do not want to offend any of the participants by putting them on the net (yet !)

Trying to find some good shots for you soon.

Have finally been able to use the Sigma 70 - 300 APO on a nice day and am quite pleased with the results, especially the lack of purple fringing !
Went to Ipswich today and on the way back drove under the Orwell Bridge and stopped on the river bank, quite a lot going on, first a few gulls

Had a good evening walking up and down, most people seemed interested in the cars and did not seem bothered to see someone walking around with a camera around his neck. Made a point of not directly taking anyones photo just in case they got annoyed. May have been a different story later in the evening when the beer had started to flow.
Will probably go back on an organized cruise day soon.

Went to Tollesbury last weekend, nice place if anyone is in the area, they have a lightship anchored in the inlets, not sure if it works any more, also some interesting huts on stilts. The area is known as "The Hard" and when they have a high tide water comes up over the road thats why the workshops are raised !

Every day I drive past a bus shelter that got blown over in the gales in January, it is getting on my nerves that it is still lying on the ground getting ruined.
Decided to try my arm and send a couple of pictures off to our local paper, have already sent a few for their competitions and the editor has asked if I could do a few local cricket matches when available.
Sent a few piccies of last week and hey presto - even got a credit under the piccie, am pretty chuffed at the moment !

An early morning
Right, youv'e waited long enough, here is a selection from the days events. The morning was a bit disapointing really. no mist over the water just a perfectly clear day with a nice blue sky, at one stage (about 5:30) I sat back on the rail of a small jetty over the river thinking that I need to do this more often. Anyway here goes.
Got down to the Mill Hotel and first thing I see is a row of ducks perched on a wall, they stayed there for the next 20 minutes !
1
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Biscuit761/Early-duck.jpg
Next shot is The Mill Hotel with a wier below, exposure about two seconds to get the water moving nicely.
2

Last shot from this location is a nice reflection of a willow in the mill pond
3
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Biscuit761/Tree-Reflection-1.jpg
Moved from this location and parked near the Quay Thatre, first shot is of the back of the theatre and the rowing club
4
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Biscuit761/The-Quay-early.jpg
Wandered down to the side of the River Stour, the light was coming off the water nicely
5
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Biscuit761/Stour-into-the-sun.jpg
Was concentrating in the view down the river so much that I nearly missed a female duck and her ducklings swimming along

A wet walk arounf Sudbury
What a lovely bank holiday weekend we are having, anyway, we still went out for a walk and of course the camera came !
Had the Sigma 70 - 300 APO strapped on the whole time as I did not want to change lenses in the rain, protected thecamera with a Waitrose bag that had a lens sized hole in the end ! Bet people thought I had a bottle of whiskey in it !
Not easy using it this way, may try and find a better protection method, anyway, here are the shots in the order they were taken.

Am really pleased with this new lens, have had it a week now and have finally started to get used to it, Nikon 18 - 55 is now back in its box, kept for when camera gets upgraded (long way off now)
Have messed about with macro and standard photography, nothing out of the ordinary here but thought it was time for another post. All but the first are with the 17 - 70 (first was the Sigma 70 - 300). Main PP was crop - resize a small amount of USM and border added.

8 Drove back from Nayland to Boxford and came across this small lake, had some enormous carp which I missed someone feeding, picture was at about F22 and 1/4 sec with polarisor.

Hi ya
The new lens looks a good buy. Bit hard to pick one out as all are very nice and sharp. Can't get over the detail of the 1st spider shot, especially since it has been cropped a bit.

Have been out in the garden with the D50 and Sigma 17 - 70, this time with a tripod - only problem is that it was windy so while the camera was rock solid the flowers kept moving !
Used a piece of black card behind the subjects on the first three, first two are french marigolds about f14 at 1/5th second.

3 - This was taken in the greenhouse but it is not brilliant, I seem to have a problem with reds bleeding, I think this is a known problem, had saturation high on this one but others with it set back to normal actually seem worse !
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Biscuit761/Small-red-flowers-1.jpg
4 - finally Antz ! Had to do a macro shot, it was only when I saw it on the monitor that I realized that they were eating / attacking a smaller bug. Was cropped and then reduced to meet the 800 pixel rule.

Had a busy week, the company I work for had a large stand at the InStore show at Earls Court, may have been the best thing we have ever done - had buyers from all the big players there spending time on our stand, have already got some very big enquireys to deal with !
Anyhow here are a few from last week starting off with Poppies !

2 - A nice centre detail shot

3 - The mother load !!!!!!!!

For some reason none of this field came out very well, all the reds were mingling even on RAW. Not sure of the polarizer was causing a problem.
4 - A orange "french" poppy (I think)

5 - A butterfly of a well known variety (whose name I have forgotten !)

6 - A bumble bee, this and all the above taken on the Sigma 17 - 70, this has been a good investment

Seem to have less time than usual to sit at the computer and put together shots for your perusal, played bowls about 9 out of the last 10 days, am also leaving for work an hour earlier than normal as we are so busy. Anyway here are a few choice ones from around Sudbury / Colchester.
1 - This was due to be my comp entry for this month but decided against it in the end, Sigma 17 - 70

2 - A series of sunset shots precceded by the sun pocking through a cloud, Sigma 17 - 70 then Sigma 70 - 300APO

I find that I normally set the camera to manual and wack the exposure up to 1/500th with aperture about 5.6 for these sort of shots, gives false colours but until I find how to take a good natural sunset I will stick with it.
C & C welcome as always

If you don't like cars this aint for you !
Went to Silverstone last Sunday for a Historic meeting, ranged from 1960 F1 and Formula Junior through various saloon and sports car events and sharing top of the bill was a 1972 - 76 F1 race and a Group C/GTP race. For those who do not know Group C was a superb formula for prototype sports cars run in endurance races including Le-Mans during the 80's to early 90's. The battles between the Silk Cut Jaguars and works Porsche 956 / 962's filled circuits around the world, went to a 6 hour event at Brands one year where ther were over 100,000 spectators. Of course soon after this the governing body tweaked the regulations with a good idea and killed sports car racing for the next 10 years.
Can not remember all the cars, will try as we go along, also a few "atmosphere" shots along the way.

As some of you may remember I was asked by our local paper to do a day freelance for them last Saturday (26th August), was due to go away the next day but said yes anyway, not often a chance like this comes along, was going to get paid and mileage for the car !!
Started off at a 24hour "Snookerthon", 4 local chaps raising over £1,000 for Addenbrooks Hospital
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Biscuit761/Snookerthon-1.jpg
Then went on to a local church where they had decorated it with flower arrangements, looked superb, a few shots below, all plus morte were used in a full page spread

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Biscuit761/Flower-festival-4.jpg
More were turned into a slide show which is on their website.
Then went to the local cricket but only saw 1/2 hours play, none were used.
Finally went on to a local footie team, "Cornard United" where I had t do a team photo and "head and shoulders" shots of the entire squad followed by match photo's, all the attached images were used in a full page spread, printing of the team photo was awfull with way too much contrast.

Had a week away 26th August to 1st September and took the opertunity to have a tour around some parts of the country we had not been to (and some we had) Pressed the shutter about 1,000 times and have wittled the down to about 600 and have selected a few for your interest. If you get bored and don't make the end of the line I will understand - although C & C will be welcome. They are really holiday snaps but in amongst them are a few I am please with.
We started off on Sunday 26th August, leaving Sudbury and decided to make our first stop in Bridgenorth, Janet had seen it on the TV and liked the look of it. It is a really nice town with amazing views, buildings and friendly people (who all seemed to be eating chips !).

Ironbridge, just a few miles up the road where we decided to stay for the night. We stayed at a nice Inn just outside of town. A few pictures from here

Day 2
22 - In the morning there was a strange red glow coming through the curtains, we soon found out that it was the sun reflecting off of 4 huge cooling towers from the nearby power station.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Biscuit761/Tower-2.jpg
We then decided to stay in Ironbridge the following night as we had stuck lucky with our room, but rather than stay local we decided to travel west - to Wales !! We ended up going up Snowdon on the mountain railway after first stopping at an RSPB Osprey watch where we played with some telescopes and I realised how insignificant my 300mm lens was even with a 1.5 x crop factor !

We came down taking loads of pictures on the way. Found only 1 garage between Snowdon and England on one of the main roads, that was full at the time and I didn't need any petrol, by the time England came I was running on fumes !
Anyway we got back to Ironbridge and the next morning set off for ...

We left Janets sister and started on a long route planned to take us to Keswick via the Wrynose and Hardnott Passses, lovely bits of road best tackled in a Caterham 7, but the old jalopy did OK.

Where it pays to find a B & B with a private drive - parking is nearly impossible there, the pull of Lake Derwent and many wonerful walking locations makes this a really popular place.

Thanks for looking.

There are some gems there, others are as you say snapshots with sentimental value
What is not in doubt is that these are beautiful parts of this country ( as opposed to inner city deprivation and filth) and youve done a great job capturing them ( whilst still having a good time)
I lived in Derwentside ( not far from the Lake) for 18 months in the early 90s and remember how breathtaking some of the scenery was.( and how treacherous in the winter:god:)
It is sometimes a little disappointing that the view you see doesn't always seem to get to the image taken but that is no reason not to try
I guess the best way to enjoy these would be to make a DVD slideshow with music ,Print out a few for "posterity" and put the rest on a HDD!
Imagine doing this with film!
Thanks for sharing:smashin:

Copied from 20th September
Tried a few shots the other day with a spray gun attached to the hose and my SB600 flash on the D50, used the Sigma 17 - 70 at various exposures, thought these were quite interesting.
