Grundig ST 55-943 GB problem - stuck on standby

Hi all, first time poster here

My 21" Grundig TV has decided to start packing up (oh joy of joys )

A few weeks ago, I went to go turn it on, using the power button as it was off totally, not on standby, and the picture came on for a few minutes, then started flickering for about 2 seconds before diapearing completely. At which point the TV went into standby. I tried bringing it back from standby, but to no avail.

So I turned it off and spent a few minutes cursing, then turned it back on and it carried on working as if nothing had happened....

About 5 days later, same thing happened, only this time, turning it off and on again after a few minutes wasn't good enough, had to leave it off for a good half hour. Then it started happeneing more frequently, needing longer gaps of off time each time. Then today, it seems to be doing it permenantly, and will not come off standby no matter how long I leave it turned off

Is this something I can cheaply fix or would it be worth buying a new TV?
Or is it even something I can fix myself, because I would really not rather buy a new TV right now (non existant funds to a certain degree).

Thing is, I also REALLY don't want to pay for it to be repaired then have it go faulty again a few months down the line, because you can imagine how annoying that would be....

Its about 3 years 2 months ish old, so well out of warrenty. Thing is the biggest I can fit in my room would prolly be a 24" at a real push, so if I do need to buy a new one, I don't reckon it'll be anything that big or expensive really.

Thanks in advance

Unless you are experienced at fault-finding, soldering and handling electronic components I think you're just going to have to call in an engineer and get an estimate.
Modern sets are too complex for d-i-y repairs and the chances of making matters worse are great.
Many things can cause the symptoms you describe...it could be a dry joint or faulty component in the power supply which wouldn't cost too much or an expensive component like a transformer making repair uneconomic but you'll never know unless you bite the bullet and call in a repairman.

Thanks, looks like I'll be getting a quote or buying a cheap second hand TV for now.

I spoke to a collegue at work, and he told me that it might be doing that because I leave it on standby every night (for like 9 hours ish). I thought it might be that, but then what the hell is the point of standby otherwise?
