OK, time for an update.
Went to Thruxton at the weekend for the BTCC. First try at shooting motorsports. Had lots of fun and got very sunburnt.
What I found interesting was that skimming through the 1100 pictures I took over the weekend, it was obvious which ones seemed to look good. Not just which weren't blurry messes (lots!), but from a composition point of view.
Definitely learned from this and will be more prepared next time.
Here are some of the pics I took that I thought looked good. Comments welcome as always
All taken with the Canon 70-300IS. Head on shots at 1/320, pans usually at 1/160

I love that one of the lots of ferraris (like my really technical description?), and my fave from the others is the #18 porsche.
I know very little about photography, but those ones look the best to me.:)

I agree with Alun, that one of the ferraris is a great shot :)

some taken of the Farnborough air show. These are from the roof of our office car park. We're not far away, but the planes don't really get close unless they're turning for a side-on pass.
Anyway, all taken with the 70-300 at full zoom, 1/500 @f8 ISO 100. Most manual focus as the lens hunts (slowly!) like a bugger if you miss the little dot of an aeroplane in the middle.
