A while back a few of us were chatting about this "film" in relation to the Speilberg one . From the trailers it was failry obvious to me this was a going to be a pile of sub-amateurish crud but it did manage to get some defenders (albeit no one that had actually seen it).

Have a look on the imdb , apparently this thing got released on dvd ...I'm almost tempted to get it just for the amusement value but alas I feel it won't function to a high level in a freak show role either.

is that this version that gets a 2.5? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425638/

as much as i like tom cruise and speilberg, thier version was one of the most dissapointing movies i've ever seen. i had high expectations for it, but it left me feeling empty, with poor cgi accounting for most of it, and one scene reminiscent of minority report (the bunker scene)

i thought there was also going to be an all cgi musical version based on the album. my mate saw a stageshow of it the other week with some of the original artists and said it was great

Whilst I'm not a huge fan of the speilberg film I'd find it very difficult to fault the visual effects work . The seemingly mundane tracking car shot is one of the best visual effects shots in the history of film and thats before you even look at the martian stuff.

However the pendragon one is slightly less enjoyable than sitting an important exam. Not that I've seen it , the trailer is bad enough.

Some of the reviews on the imdb are extremely funny.

the first review on imdb is so damn long i couldnt bring myself to read it

it's not so much the cgi is bad, it's just that i imagined a movie to be the mother of all sci fi flicks, with all the money spent on it, a major actor and director, etc. i was expecting something that would blow me away visually in the same way as seeing the matrix for the first time for example. there was nothing on screen that i've not seen before really. the martians just didn't impress me. as a kid i loved the old 53 version, and the tripods tv show, and i love the idea and the album, i just expected a lot and was dissapointed. it wasnt even great acting from tom cruise

No I can't say I enjoyed the speilberg version too much either and would have preferred a version faithful to the book , its an interesting enough , polished film but its not War of the Worlds to my mind.

The Pendragon one is interesting in how truly awful it is. Its probably some scam I imagine to net the director cash.

The Pendragon Pictures WOTW is possibly one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Low budget SFX I can take, but woefully acting, appaling script and shoddy direction are inexcusable.

I think it runs for nearly three hours...felt more like three weeks!

If you take my advice, you won't waste your time on it.

The director is quoted as claiming it cost $20million. And that he spent 130k on the hidef cameras : although last time I looked a canon GL1 was at the time about 1500quid brand new.

Its sad and desperate .

I almost want to see it ...in the same way you have to fight off the urge to pick a scab.
