Toshiba running Red Hat Linux

http://geekswithblogs.net/lorint/arc.../25/76295.aspx

Isn't neat?

The modular design of the player and running Linux which means only one thing, great potential of doing other things if you have the skills.

Just look at the standard modular HD-DVD player inside, it can be easily replaced by another drive when it breaks down, everything in the player is very much DIY just like a PC.

Don't expect that from BD camp.

I wonder if the player would be faster in booting if you replaced the 2.5GHz CPU to a faster one? more memory? 1GB?

Possibilites......

I wonder what CPU they are using in that thing? 50+ seconds to startup and 20+ seconds to load a disc. A 386dx 33mhz from the performance of it.

Seriously how stupid is it to run an OS like Linux on a consumer machine. A set-top box, no problem you start it up, it takes a few minutes to boot up, but then you don't actually switch it off. But a DVD player. You can't leave it on all the time. That just pointless. *** does it do when it loads a disc, start a HD-DVD player? Handshake with the disc and determine whether it can play it with the crap DRM tech they infect each disc with. Why isn't this loaded into a ROM to minimize runtime. Yes I expect with the advent of cheaper ARM processors, Toshiba might get this to a reasonable level, but the performance of this is just crap at the moment. Until they get this to a speed where I press a button and the machine switches on in a second, I am not wasting any money on this.

Now that is interesting

So, upgradable to Blu-Ray should HD-DVD lose the war

No you have to "umount" everytime the tray opens

It's a geek machine dude.

The start up time is at least partially related to AACS, so we can expect that to remain for a while yet, for both HD-DVD and blu-ray.
