Hiya,

Just got my region 2 of night watch.

Rather than watching the theatrical release with the built in subs I would like to watch the original Russion version.

I hate dubbing so I am avoiding the english version untill I have seen the film.

The only problem is that I cant get the "english text" subtitles to work at all.

It gives me the hard of hearing english subs but it annoys me how it gives discriptions alongside the dialogue.

Does anyone else have this problem. I have cycled through my subtitle options and I can get the commentries and hard of hearing etc but not the simple white english subtitles.

I heard this was a problem with the australian release and that it should have been fixed for the region 2 release but it appears that it hasnt been.

Do I have a duff copy or is this the case with everyone.

I'm just about to watch the theatrical release but the dvd is going back tomorrow if there is supposed to be normal english subs on disc 1 for the russian movie version.

Please advise as this is really bugging me. Is this how everyones copies have turned out or am I just unlucky?

Thanks.

Try the theatrical version on disc two - that is still in Russian but with the superior special English burnt in subtitles.

Is that exactly the same cut?

According to IMDB there are scenes removed and it is edited compared to the original russion cut. Not watching it tonight anymore as I want to get to the bottom of this.

It does have the option for english text on disc 1 but it seems to be missing once selected.

I have heard the subs are cool on the theatrical release but I want to see the original as it was intended first of all. Shame I cant speak russion. :rotfl:

Not sure that the Region 2 has the Russian cut at all, rewind states the international cut on both versions but it doesnt give running times

Disc one International cut of the film w/removable subs and 2 language options
Disc two International cut of the film as seen in cinemas w/ specially created subtitles.

make of that what you will but I suppose the easiest way to find out for sure is to watch them both (to be honest I would watch the theatrical version on disc 2 first as it has the superior subs which look cool then im going to watch the dubbed version so i can actually understand whats going on in the movie)

Edit: IMDb says the run time is 114 mins but the back of the box states a run time of 109 mins so it looks like it is the cut international version.

Yeah I think you are right about the cut being the same.

Have you tried disc 1 selecting the english text option for the subtitles. It does nothing for me at all, neither running the russian or the dubbed version makes any difference there not that I expected it should.

I do get the hard of hearing subs but they are hideously annoying and distracting.

I would be interested to hear your results on this as it seems strange that the interface has an option for "english text" but it is non existent.

Edit: IMDb says the run time is 114 mins but the back of the box states a run time of 109 mins so it looks like it is the cut international version.

bear in mind a PAL dvd will run 4% faster than the film did in the cinema. A 100 minute film would transfer to a PAL dvd as 96 minutes... so 114 mins could in theory be 109 mins on a PAL dvd
PAL dvds don't run at "true" film speed, they run faster
