My Movies

I'm going to give the MyMovies a good in the next few days but have a few questions about it....

1. If I was just to rip the main movie as a VOB file, would it work?
2. If it does, can I compress the movie file?
3. If I can, the movies will only be played on a 19" LCD so high quality is not needed - what would be a reasonable file size to compress a 90 minute movie to?
4. Would I need to rip the menu as well for episodic DVDs?
5. What advantages would using TheaterTek give me?

Thanks for your help, and feeel free to throw any other tips or tricks my way!

Yes, use DVD Shrink

Not less than 70% of original size IMO

No, DVD Shrink allows you to just rip the main movie.

Better PQ, although on a 19" monitor it's probably not worth it

hi, sorry to jump into the discussion. i've just downloaded the my movies plug-in. I already have a number of my dvds ripped to hdd as vob files.

is there any way i can add these to my movies (i.e. point my movies to their location)? It always seems to want me to choose the film from a database and then rerip the dvd.

thanks.

you choose the film from the database and then at the bottom there are two options, online and offline. If online is selected, when you click add DVD a file browser pops up and you can point it to the location of your VOB files.

If you mean like a DVD of episodes of a sitcom then yes, you're better off ripping the menu as well as all the episode files, that way you can add in one title to MyMovies and have access to all the episodes in the normal way. Otherwise you'll have to add an entry to MyMovies for each episode and store them in different folders.

ok, i'm getting a 'no movies found in folder' when trying to add some vob files in a VIDEO_TS folder. I'm doing it throught he external 'edit collection' option in the start menu.

I've done some digging and apparently this is because my movies checks the registry to see if VOB is recognised as a video. supposedly you can change registry `perceivedType=video' for VOB. I've never done much like that with the registry - doesn anyone know if there's a hack that'll do it for me - or can someone walk me through it? pleeeeeeeeeease

I thought that you needed all the bup's and ifo's too for this to work - as in a direct copy of the disc, or a fully re-encoded dvd structure. There may be a workaround, have you tried the My Movies forum?

thanks lisa. all bups and ifos are in there too. Have been on the my movies forum - the advice is to search their forum for `perceived type' - done that but no joy.

I've come across a reg hack on an australian mce forum - i might try it, btu want to do some more digging first.
