We have a few going out but now they are sold out in US.
No news from anyone as to when restocks will take place so everything is currently on hold.

No, they have already taken the money and if you would like them to KEEP YOUR ORDER CHARGED, you will get one ASAP.
Otherwise they will CREDIT YOUR MOVIETIME ACCOUNT.
They unfortunatly have you locked-in and won't refund your original card now.

I thought Movietyme processed payment when your item reached their estimated street date (pre order items) or immediatly if the item was released and would ship soon. Looks like they could not source any more units but had already billed you so they are offering a credit until they have a better idea on stock.

I really don't know as i bought it from my friend in Japan.
But i saw they state 220V so i guess they are obligated to follow that even if it's a type error.
I got a old transformer from the LaserDisc age, it's a heavy bastard but you can throw anything on it, it's 300W switchable.
Think it cost about 200 euro these days.
Here is my transformer:

Isn't it illegal to debit a credit card account for a non-shipped item? I thought they could only process the transaction once the item had shipped (or been processed for shipping)?
I do know that with debit cards (i.e. bank cards) the account can be debited beforehand.
Perhaps contact your cc issuer for refunds if you don't want to wait...

£370 = $661. How much do these things costs in the States ? Whatever, I wouldn't mind paying under £400 for an HD DVD player, sounds like a darn good bargain. Movietyme is my on-line retailer of choice, I very much prefer buying DVDs from them (especially Criterions) and if they can deliver the tosh a1 as well then I'll be singing their praises in my local church.

If it was the Quicktime Narnia trailer, then yes I would expect HD DVD to look better.
The reasons are that if you look at the info the Narnia resolution is something like 1280 X 644 and not 1280 X 720 (or at least it is while I watch it).
Also the all important bit rate should be higher on the HD DVD version.

Right got it up and running, no problems getting it going via the HDMI connection on the 32PF9830. Just some quick first observations;
Reading reports of it taking the player a while to get going but it just doesn't seem that long and didn't bother me at all.
The picture quality is awesome, very very chuffed with it on the Philips. The colours are so vibrant. As I've heard other people say, the 'preview' at the start of the discs showing Harry Potter, Batman Begins, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory etc, the detail on these films look incredible.
720p is broken for sure, just from looking at the FBI warning etc you can see it straight away, nowhere near as sharp as 1080i.
The fan on the player isn't half as loud as I expected, nothing like the xbox 360.
I'm loving the menu format for extras and stuff while 'in-film', definitely adds to the feel of it being a next gen DVD format.
Gonna be busy messing with it (pic settings etc) for a while so sorry there's no detailed impressions yet but I'll be happy to answer any questions when I get the chance.

Right guys sorry I've only just had chance to type this. On a 32" from my viewing distance (about 10-12ft), the difference between SD and HD is very noticeable in my eyes, there is not a huge difference but it's certainly a worthwhile upgrade for a screen of this size. It's very hard to gauge actually, I think if you could have a side-by-side comparison the difference would be greater than you imagine it to be. Actually my girlfriend could even tell the difference from this distance and that's saying something.
The difference becomes more apparent when moving closer to the screen say about 6-7ft (or viewing on a larger screen I presume), I've watched one after the other and HD absolutely blows SD out of the water (as expected).
With regards to if it compares to the Narnia 720p trailer off xbox live, everything I've seen on HD-DVD looks a lot better than that; more detail, sharper image, much more vibrant colours.
720p and 1080i resolutions SHOULD look basically the same on a 1366x768 LCD - they certainly look more or less indistinguishable on mine when output from the xbox 360 - but 720p from the Tosh just looks extremely poor in comparison to 1080i, it looks very soft. Someone on an american forum stated that when set to 720p, the player first downscales 1080p to 480p, then upconverts to 720p and that's what you see. After seeing it, that's exactly what it looks like. Maybe this will be fixed with a firmware update.
I'm totally chuffed with the player, no regrets whatsoever about buying it.Can't wait to get it on my projector to see what it's like on there.
I took some pics last night (not very good ones) but couldn't post them due to the file sizes. Any tips so I can share this photography masterclass?

So, you think that they're downscaling to 480 and then upconverting to 720 too? That seems like more processing power being used, which makes for a poorer image, which doesn't need to be the case if it would just downscale, rather than downscale AND upscale! Seems like a VERY silly thing to do IMHO.

I've got no idea why outputting at 720p looks poor on the toshiba players, I don't know why 1080i looks best even on 720p TV's/panels. I won't guess since I have no idea.
I was simply starting the fact that all HD-DVDs are on the disc in 1080p in order to correct your mistake in saying that the movie discs don't support 1080p.

The films are stored at 1080p on the discs I have, even though the player can't output 1080p.
I totally agree, it sounds stupid...but the 720p output looks just like the 480p output. I assure you I know what true* 720p looks like, and this ain't it.
*edit -I know it's not true 720p but downscaled from 1080p it should be bloody close.

I would be rather shocked to find that the Tosh downscales 1080p to 480p before upscaling to 720p...but you never know ;)
My guess would be that the routines for scaling to 720p are bad and that leaving your display to downscale the 1080i image to its native resolution gets you much better results.
I am sure we will find out soon enough, and I would bet that Tosh are already looking into a firmware update.

well I read in a review that the downscaler is poor, so if you have a PJ or HDTV that downscales for you, it would be wise to let the set, rather than the device, do all the work.

Don't worry about the 720p issues as you can solve it by using a scaler if you can afford one.
I have a Lumagen VisionHDP that sorts 1080p also.
Nice piece of kit, recommended.

The difference becomes more apparent when moving closer to the screen say about 6-7ft (or viewing on a larger screen I presume), I've watched one after the other and HD absolutely blows SD out of the water (as expected).
With regards to if it compares to the Narnia 720p trailer off xbox live, everything I've seen on HD-DVD looks a lot better than that; more detail, sharper image, much more vibrant colours.

hi just ordered the ax1 from movietyme as they are now in stock was going to fly over to new york next week on a city break and pick an a1 up but but the trip was going to cost about £700 plus player cost so price of £650 for ax1 is a bit easier to swallow. just hope the bank manager understands.

Different models HD-A1=$499, HD-XA1=$799 MRSP. They have the same video, audio and connectivity (XA1 has an RS232). Other differences are largely cosmetic. The one big differernce is retailers have stock of the XA1 but A1 is sold out.

In a word NO see link - All the dealers I've spoken to in the US and numerous threads on AVS from owners of both units state the difference between these is as shown below. The video processing, audio processing and connectivity bar the RS232 are the same. I think this rumor started before the units launched due to scant info. :smashin:
For the extra $300 ($499 v $799 MRSP) the AX1 has in addition to A1-
1. Motorised drop down front flap
2. Back lite motion activated remote
3. RS232 port
4. Different case construction
5. Lager feet
Only you can decide if it worth the extra. Wasn't for me:suicide:

They quote a delivered UK price of the A1 at $719.98 and the XA1 at $1169.98. They are not Toshiba authorised dealers and will be purchasing through US retailers or disties just like you or I could. The difference in price is their profit plus shipping costs. l'm still a bit copnfused about the "official" duty/vat position as their website states it is not included and is your responsibility but Craig say it's covered so may not be a problem.
Does this help ?

i wasn't happy about the price but when i listed all the things i whould of had to do to get an a1 i felt happier they include
waiting to come back into stock
either buying from an american store getting it shipped over here and hoping it makes it could have been expensive amd stressfull
or
go to new york or send someone family member etc. to purchase one costing around £500 for the mini break plus £300 for the toshiba. i have never flown before so not confident about flying also with all the shops they would of had hire a seperate plane for me for all my luggage.
i thought that £650 included every thing like vat tax and their profit as they are doing all the leg work insted of me.

Seems though people that ordered from crutchfield got theirs for around £300-350 all in. This means movietyme are taking a much LARGER profit than I thought...

Check over on AVS there's a thread that provides the actual power consumption numbers based on real life testing. I think the average was 47 watts with peak well under 80 watts. I use a 100 watt tranny and works great.

If you want you player that quick check out valuelelectronics.com. Last time I checked they had stock of XA1 and you can arrange for DHL, Fedex,UPS ect to collect from their store and deliver to your home on a 2-3 day service. Someone on this thread did just that.
I had originally placed an order on Movitytme 28/2 but cancelled as I suspected they would struggle with supply. I think the only person, apart from Craig, to had received a player placed their order in early January !

M8 just sat here watching Phantom. Not really a musical fan and I've never seen the film before. Just my opinion but I gotta say if you could see this you would be considering booking a flight to the US to pick up a unit
I'm a bit of an AV fan and I've spent a small fortune buying bits in the pursuit of improving PQ and audio. SDI mods, latest and greatest players, VP, quality cables, mains filter etc, etc. IMHO all of these pales in comparison to the improvement from a £350 player has made to my setup - no contest.
What more can I say apart from I think I need a bigger screen:devil:

Hi Guy's,
I received my Serenity HD-DVD from MovieTyme this morning, just 24 hours after placing my order for the XA1 and this disc. I'm very impressed with the speed and efficiency of MovieTyme's service on the disc and therefore very hopefull that the player will also be received in the "not too distant" future!
The disc was posted from Burntwood in the UK so I'm hopefull that this indicates the players will be sent as a combined shipment to Burntwood from the States and then forwarded to us via Royal Mail within the UK. :smashin:
I would think a single large shipment of multiple players from the US to the UK would probably be the most "economical" way for MovieTyme to export the players. This would also explain how MovieTyme can advertise the players on their website with a "DELIVERED" price of £650, as shipping them this way has the benefit to us of ensuring that we won't have any VAT & Import duties to pay as these will have been paid by MovieTyme upon receipt at Burntwood.
Maybe Craig could confirm if this is how it will be done?
I sure do hope Craig's eta of 7 to 10 days is correct as I too am very keen to receive this player and start watching High Definition movies a.s.a.p .......... it has after all been a very long wait for all of us here in the UK! :( ........ I'm also due to have my Sky-HD box installed by the end of May too!
I'll be hooking mine up to my Panasonic TH-50PHD7 1366 x 768 pixel resolution Plasma display, hopefully via HDMi. I say "hopefully" because I believe that the 7 Series Panasonic Plasma models do not accept 50hz 1080i signals via their HDMi input blade BUT DO accept 60hz 1080i signals ok? With this Toshiba player being a genuine US Import model, I'm hoping that this means it will generate a 60hz and therefore "compatible" signal ......... Anyone? :lease:
Failing this I will use the good old analogue component connections and keep my fingers crossed that the Studios DON'T start to include the dreaded "downrez flag" on any of their future HD-DVD releases. (I believe that all of the titles announced so far are not flagged and will therefore allow full 1080i output via the Toshiba's Component connections? :lease:
ps: As far as the price goes, £650 is actualy pretty reasonable as it clearly states on the website's order page that this is a "delivered" price for this model!
Fyi: I have also seen it advertised as being available from two other UK sources for £769 and £800 respectively, and neither of these sources currently have players "in-hand, in the UK" either!

The A1 outputs at at 60hz. I seem to recall some issue with the Panny HDMI board and 50Hz but this should be OK with 60Hz. Try a post on the video scaler thread.
Movietyme stock a small selection of of DVD's for next day UK delivery hence the quick turnaround.
You can buy the XA1 for about £433 from US retailers. The magic question is duty and VAT and if it's covered in the Movietyme price then it's a pretty good deal. I still find it interesting that on the Movietyme FAQ they say you are liable for TAX;) on any item over £18. But so long as you don't have to pay who cares:devil:
AVI
Just ordered the XA1 from movietyme
Its beans on toast for the next while with sky hd also:rotfl:
Im going to use this with panasonic 50phd7 and Lumagen Hdp.However i will then have 3 hdmi outputs then( current arcam dv79/skyhd and XA1) and only 2 inputs on the HDP.
Do any of you guy's know of any 2into1 or 3into1 adapter for the HDP:lease:
Hi mthor, :hiya:
Well that makes five of us on here who have ordered an XA1 from MovieTyme! :smashin:
Does the Lumagen really improve upon the scaling built into the PHD7? ........ Or was your main reason for it's purchase the duel HDMi switching ability?
I have been intending to use my PHD7's Component input blade for my Sky-HD box as it will be a 50hz signal that the PHD7's HDMi blade won't accept. As you seem to intend to use the Sky-HD HDMi connection though, I assume that you can input PAL @ 50hz via HDMi into the Lumagen and then output @ 60hz signal from it into the PHD7's HDMi blade?
As regards your 3x HDMi connection issue, couldn't you purchase a 2nd HDMi blade for your PHD7 AND input the XA1's signal directly into the panel, leaving the DV79 & Sky HD box connected via the Lumagen? ......... The only problem is I can't remember if you can connect 2x HDMi blades to the PHD7? ............ I think you can though, just not 3!
Hi KBDVD,
I only have a dvi board on my phd7,so i cant compare sky using the displays scaler, but i have to say the picture is excellent for me(50>60z tru HDP doesnt bother me :) .The interlaced hdmi from DV79 is great too.
Ideally i only want 1 cable:god: running to the display + it may be better to run 720p/1080i from AX1/skyhd into the hdp and let it scale to 768.
Also forgot about a PS3/BD Player so may need to find a 4/5 into 1 :rotfl:

Scaling is pretty good in the Panasonics but a scaler improves alot.
The Lumagen improved alot, first i didn't see so much difference but after i used the multi-picture feature of the Panny where you can display two inputs at the same time i could clearly see the dramatic difference.
The input without scaler looked blurry, and the one with the Lumagen was razor sharp.
Now after some time i couldn't beleive i could be without it.
Also the colors were improved and you get a 3D picture feeling.
With DVD i could se major improvements.
Good think also is that you don't need to have alot of input boards and such and it's enough with the VGA input.
The latest firmware upgrade that completes the 10-bit processing path was like WHOA!
Are Movietyme still selling the XA1?

It even allows me to place one in my shopping cart but that's as far as it goes.

seem that there are so many different stories going round  got a mail from Movietyme stating shipping would be Tuesday /Wednesday of next week " fingers crossed" ,but must admit that was before I clicked the buy button,
I mean if I have to wait would have preferred to wait for the cheaper unit then it not a big wrench to part with when the dual format players come out

Here's a link to the correct page: http://www.movietyme.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=291 BUT as per the earlier posts, it seems that it is now not possible to process your order from this page as you would expect.

The XA sells for $800 (but I've seen one for $700) add $50 for shipping and 14% duty and vat and you end up with £625. I would have ordered for £650 but the site wouldn't let me. I'll have a go at importing instead.
Most big sites won't export to the UK and I haven't found anywhere in stock.

Try Valuelectronics.com and arrange DHL, UPS etc to pick it up at the store and deliver to your home or rent a US address at Eaziship.com and they will forward. Option B is cheaper but shipment is about a week to 10 days.

Only payment I've made was £57.99 to P2G. The box was delivered and I havn't been charged any duty or VAT. I may have just been lucky as I was expecting to pay this. I believe duty is 14% of the combined items and shipping cost plus VAT on this commodity.

On the original email from P2G is said I "may" be charged customs tax and if so it would be at a rate of 20% of the value of the goods. So without Tax £346 or with tax £404 using their rate. The value declertaion on the parcel is $499 only.

Craig replied to a PM of mine the other day. It just takes them time and effort to sort these things out. I'm sure he isn't the only person at the company either. At least he makes the effort, which is great IMHO.

If this helps anyone
I ordered on morning of the 29th. I enquired by e-mail yesterday morning, and received a reply in the afternoon. the reply was that more stock of the XA1 was coming in and I should have my player by the middle to end of next week.

Great news, dont know what you were worrying about.:suicide: Not long now.
Craig from MovieTyme hasn't posted on here for a few days now ....... I'm sure everything is progressing nicely with our orders, but it would be nice to hear from him again now that wev'e all spent our money. It's just kinda reassuring when there's representation on here from the company that you have placed an order with, especially when the order involves big bucks and international shipment and importation.
As has been mentioned in the DVD Supplier forum, this site isn't a support service for Movietyme, CD-Wow or any other company.
If there are queries with orders, they should be directed to whichever company in the form of a PM or email.
Seth Geko: Fair comment. I did not mean to cause offence or generate any ill-feeling with the above post.
Fyi: I had already sent a PM to Craig @ MovieTyme at 6.30pm Friday 28/04 following the placing of my order at 7.00am that morning, asking if I had ordered soon enough to be included in the next shipment? I was not expecting a reply before yesterday due to the Bank Holiday, and indeed have still to receive a reply, but I'm sure I'll hear something soon.
In fact, my comment above, which I posted this morning, (Weds 03/05) was prompted by the fact that Craig did not post anything on this thread yesterday (Tues 02/05). I was hoping that we might hear from Craig on here Tuesday following the long Bank Holiday weekend as there had been a number of new orders placed during this period and also some uncertainty expressed about the inability to order XA1's over the weekend. I said as much on Sunday (30/05):
Hi orc brute, :hiya:
Here's a link to the correct page: http://www.movietyme.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=291 BUT as per the earlier posts, it seems that it is now not possible to process your order from this page as you would expect.
I think we will all have to wait untill Craig is back on line (which probably won't be untill Tuesday) before we get to know exactly where we all stand.
Keith.
Craig: I'm sorry that my post was seemingly the catalyst for the criticism generated by shaithis! By way of atonement I would respectfully draw your attention to an earlier post of mine on here this weekend:
Hi Guy's,
I received my Serenity HD-DVD from MovieTyme this morning, just 24 hours after placing my order for the XA1 and this disc.
Maybe Craig could confirm if this is how it will be done?
ps: As far as the price goes, £650 is actualy pretty reasonable as it clearly states on the website's order page that this is a "delivered" price for this model!
Fyi: I have also seen it advertised as being available from two other UK sources for £769 and £800 respectively, and neither of these sources currently have players "in-hand, in the UK" either!
Keith.

No offense was taken - it's been raised before on the DVD Retailers area and the same applies across the forums with regard to this manner. I wasn't accusing anyone of not PM'ing or emailing, rather as the rules state, not to turn the forums into a support area for any one particular retailer, which this was verging on doing.
As stated, I'm sure Craig/Movietyme will respond to emails and PM's as soon as he/they can.

hi doom arrived this morning so thats two hd-dvds the other being serenity.
i thought i would have to pay vat tax on top of the £650 so i went for the option of having it shipped direct for £80 less to cover tax vat cost roll on saturday.
i got a cheap £25 hdmi lead from argos but might upgrade to a better quality one if i think its not very good.
thats two items on my list down just the new projector and lcd tv to get next.
