:hiya: I almost did just that when I telephoned Sony U.K. and asked them why my STR DB925 Amp/Reciever would not output audio from a coaxial digital connection but WOULD output no bother from the optical digital!
The "technician" at Sony advised this was a hardware problem with the amp/receiver and it would have to go to an authorised dealer for repair!
I did contact my local dealer and they sorted it "on-air" by telephone in five seconds flat. Open the flap on the front of the machine and change the input selector to either "Auto" or optical/coaxial whatever was required.
So much for Sony's expertise!!!!!

i nearly sent my Denon 3803 back to be repaired because i couldnt get the optical input to work.........(not on Denons advice tho, it wouldnt work, the 7oaks i go to said bring it in, we'll send it on to be repaired, which was rather nice) anyhow, i decided to have one last attempted, decided to pull the amp all the way forward....and found out that the Optical inputs wernt at the top.....the outputs were...and the inputs started with 4 being at the top of the line of them, not 1.......DOH...lol

so luckily i didnt have to do without my lovely surround amp for a few weeks.....so glad i double checked...heh
