Blu-Ray/HD-DVD Recorder?

Not sure which one I will go for, but does anyone know when the recorder versions will be available? With Sky HD on its way next month I'd like to record HD.

Not for a long time. In fact there will be a lot of issues with the recorders. It appears that they will probably only be made with firewire. The reason is that they have to record MPEG information and you can't get that through HDMI. So either the cable/SAT box will have to have a firewire port that is supported by software in the cable/SAT box or a firewire port on the TV with software support which can only be used for over the air broadcasts or via cable when using a cable card (not cable box).

Unfortunately the Sky HD STB (at least the first gen box) doesn't have a firewire output. I'm fairly sure that Blu-ray and HD DVD recorders won't feature HD component inputs either.

Sounds like a serious issue

I understand why Sky haven't added a firewire port, but maybe their hand can be forced once the recorders hit the market.

We can but hope...

I think both HDMI and component are either output such as the cable/SAT box or DVD player or input such as the TV only using colorspace and sync information. I don't think either can can be used bidirectional with MPEG data in one direction and colorspace and sync in the other.

An HDMI or Component port can either output data or input data but not both.

Cable/SAT boxes or DVD players using the HDMI or component port only outputs data.

HDTVs using the HDMI or component port only inputs data.

The information that is output or input on an HDMI or component port is called colorspace data. This is known a Luma and Chroma data (intensity information and color information).

Since the HDMI and component ports are designed to only output or input colorspace data, it would not be able to input or output MPEG data.

Fireware is used for blue-ray recorders because it can transfer any type of data in either direction. It can input MPEG data to be recorded and output colorspace data to be displayed on the HDTV. Firewire only requires that there is software implemented on each end of the firewire connection to perform any type of transfer of data that is desired. No additional hardware is required.
