Agreed, no star wars on the blu-ray list either. I don't really understand why the studios arn't coming out early with their big guns to push the new formats.

An extended version Lord of the rings box set in high def is just what the format needs.

Both lists have some great films but they are both a bit disapointing.

crap... Lord of the Rings on HD, Star Wars on Bluray this will be my downfall. However I see Deadwood Season One (HBO) on both lists, will some releases be on 2 formats ??

yes, Warner, paramount and HBO (and probably others) will be releasing titles on both formats. Not necessarily all of the same titles though.

I mean, what is the point of releasing stuff on both formats? How does that benefit the customer? With these big companies sitting on the fence like this then it just means that the average person won't know where to put their money.

Hey as long as they release the entire Seagal back catalogue on HD DVD I'll be buying on

I think its good for the consumer that some studios are releaseing in both formats, at least whichever format you pick will have a decent ammount of films even if it fails.

It's blu-ray and HD-DVD who couldn't agree to one format that are being bad for the consumer rather than the movie studios in this case. It is a shame though that all the studios didn't all pick the same format from the beginning, while I often don't agree with how studios act I can't blame them here.

All the studios did pick one format apat from Universal as people keep saying.

Its the same as Toshiba being the only manufacturer to build HD-DVD players.

If anyones to blame its them.

It highly likely we will see LOTR on BD but as FOX is BD exclusive its unlikely IMO you will see SW on HD-DVD.

Fox is a major BD player and they have stated they are waiting for the players to be in the shops before they announce releases.

Paramount and Warner picked both formats. Universal chose HD-DVD. Disney Chose Blu-ray, Fox chose Blu-ray and well its obvious what Sony did. Fox Went Blu-ray because they were the only format that was willing to add extra copy protection methods specifically for them, even if it hurt the consumer. In fact I belive the BD+ is one of the main reasons Blu-ray isn't out yet.

Its the same as Toshiba being the only manufacturer to build HD-DVD players.

If anyones to blame its them.

Both formats have invested billions, both formats obviously felt they had enough chance of winning to not chose to share the spoils with each other, dispite it being far far better for the consumer. They are both to blame. Blaming toshiba and universal for there being a format war while beliveing the blu-ray association are completly free from blame ..... I need a head shaking smily, I can't belive people can be so bias.

Ditto.

None of the other companies have a problem supporting BD so why does that excuse Toshiba and Universal?

Remove Toshiba and Universal from the equasion and HD-DVD has no product.

Ditto.

I'm not at all bias. I have a slight preference due to cost and region codeing, if that changed I would want blu-ray to win. Even if that doesn't change I will still happily buy a blu-ray player if they win, although it will be longer untill the players are a sensible price. Having a preference is not bias, bias is twisting the facts, only listening to certain things that support what you belive and ignoreing the rest.

I have corrected multiple instances of people critaseing Blu-ray unfairly or wrongly on this forum over the last couple of days which should show I'm not at all bias. It's just that there has been far more unfair posts towards HD-DVD in the same time frame, which I'm sure you know  .

I just see alot of people buying into HD-DVD because its cheaper than BD, then coming back on the forums next near saying 'Whens Spiderman coming out? Whens X-Men coming out, what about Star Wars?' to be told, sorry they are BD only titles.

If you look at April and Mays HD-DVD releases you see that, bar one, they are all from Universal. My point being if it wasn't for Universal HD-DVD would only have 1 movie released for it. And Chronos: HD-DVD Digital Reference Series Ed is not even a movie is it?

But you can make the same argument on the other side. While Blu-ray association and HD-DVD association are made up from hundreds of companies. Without Toshiba HD-DVD wouldn’t exist true but then without Sony Blu-ray wouldn't exist.

Both these associations are guilty of not working together to produce what is best for the consumer. They both had the chance to give us what we wanted and to take our money but they both failed. Blaming 1 side simply because you prefer the other side to succeed is poor.

I just see alot of people buying into HD-DVD because its cheaper than BD, then coming back on the forums next near saying 'Whens Spiderman coming out? Whens X-Men coming out, what about Star Wars?' to be told, sorry they are BD only titles.

You can make exactly the same argument with titles like Lord of the rings. Having 2 formats sucks for us. The quicker we are down to 1 format the better whoever it is.

9 of the first 10 Blu-ray releases are from Sony, Anyone can chose to pick and chose statistics to suit their argument.

June 13, 2006
• Kung Fu Hustle (Sony)
• Legends of the Fall (Sony)
• RoboCop (MGM)
• Species (MGM)
• Stealth (Sony)
• S.W.A.T. (Sony)
• The Terminator (MGM)

June 27, 2006
• Crash (Lionsgate)
• Lord of War (Lionsgate)
• The Punisher (Lionsgate)
• Saw (Lionsgate)
• Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Lionsgate)

I count three, but if you want to say MGM is Sony then I'll settle for two.

Nine of the FIRST ten titles were Sony I said

May 23, 2006
• 50 First Dates (Sony)
• The Fifth Element (Sony)
• Hitch (Sony)
• House of Flying Daggers (Sony)
• A Knight's Tale (Sony)
• The Last Waltz (MGM)
• Resident Evil: Apocalypse (Sony)
• xXx (Sony)

June 6, 2006
• Underworld: Evolution (Sony)

June 13, 2006
• Kung Fu Hustle (Sony)

My point was that anyone can specifically choose which statistics to use to support their point, it doesn't make them right. So I stoped just before the MGM titles hit the bluray list to show how easy it was to twist the facts as I belived you were doing by starting your counting after the warner HD-DVD titles.

Is anybody else here planning to only buy new releases on whichever HD format they choose? I ask because that's what I'm planning to do as starting to buy older films I already have on DVD will result in me having to buy them all which wouldn't be kind on the wallet. Maybe just the odd top notch title but that's it...

I'll be replaceing say my 10 favourite movies or so I think, but I doubt I'll be replaceing my entire DVD collection. I'm not buying DVD's at all at the moment (other than serenity as I wanted to support that) and just relying on online rentals from blockbuster. Then I'll have money to buy the movies I want in High def.

I can't wait to see things like King Kong in high def, its supposed to be pretty special.

Good article, thanks. Will be interesting to see what fox plan to fill up the 50Gb with on the couple of titles they intend to release on that format. Thats alot of bonus features.

I know its not generally a very highly respected film but I think its fantastic and would love to watch Armeggdon on Blu-ray.

Warner who support both sides say they will release their movies on both formats at the same time but BD will need some time to catch up to the title already launched on HD-DVD. Taking that into account I think we can assume • The Last Samurai (Warner) • Million Dollar Baby (Warner) • Phantom of the Opera (2004) (Warner) will be BD launch titles also.
