Also did you see the weight - 28.2lbs. Look's like the P2G volumetric weight band is equiv to 27kg so about £109 !!! to get to the UK.

Matt
Make sure you read up about the A1's various AV issues on the AVSforum. Its nothing too serious but it does send out VERY LOUD TEST TONES & if using optical it downconverts the DD+ soundtrack to a DTS Stream. If you want the best sound then use HDMI or 6 Analogue inputs. Oh & everyone reckons 1080i looks much better than 720P even on 720P Hardware.
Enjoy & make sure you report back here asap!

Isnt 28lbs about 12kg?
MattDJ

Will do...
Isnt 28lbs about 12kg?
Yea just over. It's the volumteric weight that's the issue (22"x19"x11") that puts the shipping charge equiv t the 25-30kg band i.e. £109.
If you go into the P2G web site and select rent a US address and then select "click here for more details" it brings up a weight/volume cost calc.
Please tell me I got it wrong :god:

I saw a unit on Ebay sold for $720 at the weekend to someone in the UK. This didn't include shipping and I assume it will be subject to duty/vat. Why ?????

Why do you have so high duty in the U.K compared to the rest of Europe?

Desperate people with lots of money that didn't go to the effort of preordering. Personally I think its a waste of money to pay a couple of hundred $ extra rather than waiting a couple of weeks. But people earn their money and can spend it anyway they chose.

We got VAT at 17.5% and variable import duty that happens to be 14% on US imported DVD players. Oh and we pay VAT on the import duty I think:mad:
How does in work in other parts of the EU ??

Interesting... As far as I know there is no duty on importing an item from one EU county to another EU country. Wonder which EU country has lowest import/VAT. Could become the hub for imported US players

I think the issue you highlight is only for goods manufactured in the EU and not goods imported via the USA.
I have to sign a declaration every year for each export account to confirm that the goods we sell are manufactured in the EU and therefore not liable for VAT between EU states.

Was thinking my sister is living out in Cyprus, could get a player delivered to her place:grin:
I'm pretty sure the VAT is 15% for cyprus???

Not sure but if Sweden has 0% import duty on this item then once it has been impoted in to the EU via Sweden I suspect it can be sold to another EU country without further duty. I purchase stuff from Germany that's made in Japan and don't get charged any UK impot tax or VAT.
Any experts out there ??

some guy was saying on AVS forums that there is no point in buying a HD-DVD player if your screen size is smaller than 50 inches
*** is he on about??
i have the Toshiba 37wlt58 LCD and im sure HD will look miles better than standard dvd on this set

I have a 50" Panasonic TH6 something or other, and a Sharp 37" LCD (the one that has HDCP DVI, that was released before the "Titanium")...
I used to have a D-VHS player and about 20 odds films, T2, Ice Age... and they all looked amazing. I saw the HD-DVD toshiba in Las Vegas, and it looked great, seemed less harsh on the eyes compared to the D-VHS - a kinda "soft" HD picture.
Doesnt matter about the size. Its what you feed it.

He might have been referring to the eyes ability to resolve resolution over a given distance, so depending on your seating distance you may not be able to resolve the extra detail available in a 1080 display. Try the search over there for more info - I'm sure a graph was posted which showed what res can be resolved from certain distances.
There are other benefits to HD DVD so even if you couldn't see the estra res, you would see other image improvements.

Can I ask, once the player has been shipped to your US P2G address, do P2G then contact you to arrange delivery to UK ?

Yes - they will contact you using the registration details you provided when you first rented the address.

Avi,
Is there not a problem with the delivery address (proxy U.S. P2G address) not matching the cardholder's address (and will look like possible fraud)?.

Not in my case:grin: Once I'd placed my order with Crutchfield using the US P2G address their international team emailed me and requested my UK address and some other stuff. They also pointed out that the player was US voltage and region 1 etc.
All very professional and friendly.:smashin:
I also placed an order with Movietyme but cancelled as they could not confirm availability. I also tried valueelectrronics but communication was poor IMHO.

Thought there wasn't any region coding on HD DVD or Blu-ray

Blu-ray is region coded, although less regions than before. There is now 3 I think. We are still not in the same region as the states or Japan so its just as bad for us. I think we are with the great movie continent of Africa
HD-DVD has no region encoding
However the HD-DVD players also play normal DVD's and normal DVD's are region encoded just like normal. So these HD-DVD players will play HD-DVD's from anywhere in the world but only region 1 normal DVDs. weather or not these players can be made region free like most normal DVD players is unknown yet I believe. Though I assume they will be able to
Just heard that my shipment of XA1's is leaving in the next few days

This prob sounds stupid, but are there no US retailers that will ship direct to the UK? Why the need for all this 'parcels to go' stuff?

Non of the Toshiba approved US dealers I've enquired will as it's against the terms of their dealer contract. You may find non-approved dealers that will but they don't have stock. There are places like Movietyme and Nextgen that will offer a supply service but I doubt they have stock today.
