Okay peeps. What's your fav music CD of the moment?
I've got to say it's Grace by Jeff Buckley.
Can't get the CD out of my player :)
After that it'd have to be The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails.
Come With Us : Chemical Brothers
Geogaddi: Boards of Canada
13 Tales from Urban Bohemia: The Dandy Warhols
Simple Things: Zero 7
Tourist: St Germaine
BRMC:Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
LOTR soundtrack: Howard Shore
Are all the ones that I mainly listen to at the moment. I can be a bit eclectic. I often listen to albums I don't really rate all that much just to see what they are about ( BRMC a case in point)
But I quite like most of the others.
So solid crew

My favourite music CD of the moment would have to be Nickelback:Silver Side Up.Got their previous album as well-The State. It's good too but not so instantly catchy.

'The State' is a much superior album to 'Silver Side Up' if you ask me...
Not to say 'Silver Side Up' is bad, cos it ain't.

I wont disagree with that pointon. I have only listened to The State twice so far and it is growing on me.I will have to listen to it a few more times before i make up my mind which one i like the best.

I have to agree with you on that last part, Spectre. I just hope you aren't including the genuine heavy metal and hardcore (punk, not dance crap) genres in that.
Many people only hear the mainstream pants metal kids send into the charts with their pocket money, and it becomes embarrasing to say you like Heavy Metal...
I don't wear chains and I have no piercings.
Joan Osbourne - Relish

Romeo and Juliet

I feel quite out of this one as I have never heard of most of the artists mentioned. Musically I stopped in the seventies and still play Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers and other West Coast bands of that era on the rare occasions that I bother.

West coast music - Do you have any of The Ventures?
This was my Dad's fav band. Got hundreds of their CD's/LP's and laserdiscs kicking around.
I still love listening to Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers (Michael McDonald has a fantastic voice :) ).
Get out there m8 and give anything a listen. I've just come across Macy Gray's new CD (The ID) and it's amazing.

Hey Spectre,i didnt realise that you had such an appreciation for good music. All of the above are personal favourites of mine.I would definitely agree that there has been a lack of good heavy rock music since the mid 90's,but i must say that it was refreshing to hear Nickelback. Now allow me to add a few more from my collection to the above list - Firehouse,Aerosmith,Poison,Motley Crue,Whitesnake,Bonfire,Faster Pussycat,Kiss,Giuffria,Mr.Big,Joe Lynn Turner,Van Halen,David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper,L.A.Guns, Damn Yankees,Mamas Boys,Ozzy Osbourne,Warrant,Danger Danger,Thunder,Rush,Michael Monroe,Honeymoon Suite,Loverboy.

My musical tastes are pretty widespread. I like what I like and would'nt say I was in to a particular genre as such. But was a bit of a metal head when I was a teenager. In those days I hated dance/rave/acid house music but now I've come around full circle and I genuinely do like a lot of dance/trance etc...... music these days (but not garage I have to say!), and it features quite a lot in my rather varied music collection. I'm still partial to a bit of old school heavy metal now and agian. I still spin my old albums from time to time.
I have been playing guitar since my metal years, on and off for about 12 years and these are my influences:
Randy Rhoads - Ozzy Osborne, Quiet Riot
Jimmy Page - Led Zeppelin
Dave Gilmore - Pink Floyd
Tony Iommi - Black Sabbath
Eddie Van Halen - Van Halen

Ron240 - nice one. Yeah all those you mentioned are hovering just below my favourites.
Just before Napster wound up it was possible to get some rare and deleted rock like the never released Heavy Pettin album.
Despite being quite good, Morpheus doesn't quite have the real rarities Napster did.
Nobody out there - even the rock fans - will remember our band - Big Chill.
Darth,
As a teenager (probably years before you were born) I used to go to Eel Pie Island in Twickenham every Sunday night. The resident band was The Yardbirds featuring a very young Eric Clapton and later Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.
When the singer left they changed their name to Led Zep and the rest - as they say - is rock history.
Sometimes for a change we used to go to Kingston and watch Graham Bond with Ginger Baker on drums.
People pay a small fortune nowadays to watch Eric Clapton yet I saw him every week for 10/- (fifty pence to you)

Spectre,
you've surprised me again - Heavy Pettin,i forgot to mention them in my list.Hamie,Punky,Gordon,Brian and Gary were an excellent 80's band,in fact a local band for me at the time.Do you remember when channel 4 showed their full lengh video back in 84 i think?I taped it and used to watch it a lot but it accidently got taped over so i tried to buy the retail copy but this was around 86 and unfortunately it had been deleted. You said about their album that was never released,do you mean Big Bang? That was the album with their(87 i think) song for Europe entry - Romeo.I bought the 12" of this and was very dissapointed when they split up soon after, and then again when Polydor said they were not releasing the album. But i got it a couple of years later when it was released by FM Revolver - still got it.
Napster was fantastic, cant see there ever being anything quite as good.
You are right i dont remember your band, but im sure i would have liked your music if it was at all influenced by any of the bands you have mentioned...:)

Popped another disk in my player there today - Violator by Depeche Mode.
Fantastic :) Forgot how much I love this album. A classic.
Also had a revisit to another fab album from the mid ninties. Blood Meridian by Numb. If you like your music loud and industrial then get a hold of this rare CD
At this rate I think I'll have to revisit all my CD's (all 1200 of them ;) ) just to make sure I'm not missing out on anything.
BTW, just got Macy Gray's The ID CD and it's awesome too :)

I also need to mention The Fun Lovin' Criminals.

I don't know how it got onto fav artists so could we please get back to fav CD's of the moment.
Just relistened to Bowie's Black Tie White Noise - some cracking tracks on this album too :)
Oh, how I'm enjoying going through my CD collection again
Well I will admit I used to be into metal in my younger days( ages 12 till 18 say I call it my cider phase).
I've still got time for the Black Sabbath in the ozzy days and I'll still listen to Pink Floyd and Alice Cooper ( nothing after constrictor though).
But guys seriously Def Leppard ! come on their early stuff is just inept and Sclub7 are less tackier than their newest stuff ! Man you'll be telling me you've all got mullets next!
I'm not a music snob I defend anyone's right to listen to anything they like ; hell I've got numerous tangerine dream albums and not just the hip ones know what I mean: there's even the odd Jean Michel Jarre album in there ( OK all of them...) I really like Leonard Cohen... see I'm not ashamed!
but guys... def leppard!!!! anything but them. Bros were more talented or even and I hesitate to say this... Dio! ( oh god too much bleurghhhhhhh!) Well maybe not Dio...

I think you are contradicting yourself a bit here.
But seriously though,Duf Leotard are one of the classic British rock outfits, immensely talented musicians who know how to put on a live show.Although i will admit that their later work was not quite in the same class.

Live Live !!!??? I've heard them live at the SECC. I've heard Great White live and Britney Fox too and they really suck but at least they were actually playing and singing unlike def leppard. Put it this way they could get rid of the lot of them and just keep John Lange and they would sound 10 times better as long as they never played live again.
Pyromania dingy overdubbed screetchy bland manure. Setting fire to it would be a good thing ( I actually do have it on vinyl even somewhere)
Oh my god I just remembered Magnum ah jeezus... Rodney Mathews is a pretty good drummer though : shame he only painted their album covers!
Look no offence if you're a fan but immensely talented???!! Where?? I mean come on this is Def Leppard you're talking about.
i wasn't aware we were slagging off every body else's taste in music....!!

Ok, here are some facts.
The original 'well known' line up of Def Leppard was seriously lacking in talent. Drummer Rick Allen was the most talented among them and for a mid-teenager he was pretty skilled.
Neither Pete Willis or Steve Clarke were particularly good guitarists and Joe Elliot wasn't and never has been able to sing.
However, their onstage energy won over fans and got them signed up to polygram. This was the time when there wasn't too much competition in rock and possibly the last time in music where such 'raw' inablility could get a record deal. Nowadays guitarists nearly as good as Joe Satriani don't necessarily get a look-in.
Def Leppard's big break came when Mutt Lange produced their albums. He had massive input and gets a writing credit, and by using memorable moments from other famous music incorporated but hidden in their songs, managed to lay down some spectacularly well produced catchy songs. This started back in the 80's when the Atari ST was the machine of choice for midi sequencers. The drums, any other percussion FX and the whole bass line on Pyromania and Hysteria were sequenced.
By getting Joe Elliot to growl out the vocals enough times, it's possible to get an in-tune version which doesn't sound bad.
Infact Hysteria was a really good album IMO.
Nowadays, the lineup is much more skilled. Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell are both decent guitarists. And over the years Rick Savage and Joe Elliot have got 10th level experience points.
And you absolutely have to admire the tenacity of Rick Allen who re-learned to play drums despite the loss of his left arm.
Right-handed drummers usually use their left arm to play the snare drum, toms and cymbals. The left foot controls the hi-hat pedal and maybe a second bass drum.
Rick Allen arranged an electronic kit so that his left foot now plays the snare, toms and (I think cymbals). Some people find patting their head and rubbing their stomach difficult. Drumming is like doing this to the nth level and applying a completely different task to the left foot takes the process a whole lot further.
He deserves the rewards he gets IMO.
Anyhow Def Leppard these days are veterans and are more likely to produce and play decent music live than they ever have been.
Whether they are your personal taste or not, they are multi-millionaires and very popular still.
I like Hysteria and I'm certainly not ashamed of that.
I like Dio Holy Diver and Sacred Heart, too. I don't think it's classic music, but Ronnie James Dio is one of my favourite vocalists, Vivian Campbell is, as I say, a decent guitarist, and though a bit busy, Vinny Appice's drumming is interesting and great fun to play along to.
Well that's all I have to say about that.
I think it's valid to say what you don't like as well as what you do. Mr D doesn't like Del Leppard. I don't care. It won't stop me from liking (some) of their stuff. And I won't get upset because at the end of the day the only person's opinion that matters to me is mine.
So let's not get upset when some anonymous person says they don't like your band. Going further and saying it's like manure is perhaps a little too much, Mr. D. I'm guilty of this myself for which I apologise. I deliberately used words that were asterisked out, though, so I can't be accused of slagging it off :).
Anyhow lets cool it a bit because it's a good thing that we have different taste in music and movies. How boring would the world be if we all agreed?
I'm not slagging off anyone's tastes and I'm not seeking justification as for anyone's musical favourites ( like I said I've got plenty in my collection that I deserve villification for). I'm slagging off a band : one which I hasten to add I've got a couple of albums from and have seen live.
I just think def leppard were one of the nails in the coffin of AOR ( itself a retrograde term if ever I heard one)
My wife has just bought me the remastered - 'Shaking the Tree' by Peter Gabriel, the improved sound quality is surprisingly measurable. I'm impressed.
She also bought 'All that you can't leave behind' by U2 - I loved their late 80's stuff, but not their 90's music - however good album now.

Watching the beginning of ER the other week, my ears pricked up to the Lou Reed stylee track playing as Abby was clearing her things from Luca's apartment.
Did a search on the internet using the lyrics, turned out to be a track "Short Skirt/Long Jacket", bought the album, "Comfort Eagle" by Cake. It's really good.
Normally, Punk, old and new, Dropkick Murphys, Lemonheads, Guitar Gangsters, Anti-Nowhere League, The Crack, The Business.
Peter Gabriel era Genesis, before Phil Collins brought his divorce to the band, Yes, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Alison Krauss, Elton John up to Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, Steely Dan, Super Furry Animals, Andrea Bocelli, but above all else, as was and probably always will be .... Little Feat.

Must agree that Jeff Buckley's "Grace" CD is oustanding - one of the best voices ever? The fact that he's no longer with us is a great shame. To make matters worse, my copy has gone missing - I have the case but there's no disc inside! Good excuse to buy it on vinyl if it's available I guess.
Others I've been listening to recently:
Diana Krall - All for You - an amazing recording
Gomez - Bring it on - I'd forgotten how good this is
Spirit of the West - Go Figure - you've probably never heard of this Canadian band but the last track on this fine album has one of the best recorded bass lines you'll ever hear in my opinion. Great musicians, great songs, superb recording.
The Fall - Infotainment Scan - poor recording but worth it to hear Mark E Smith singing "I'm lost in music, feel so alive..."!
Oh, and anything by The Waterboys.
