Excellent. That's me convinced already. As soon as I can get a HD DVD player that's multiregion on standard DVD then i'm in.

Yep but one poster stating the player would not play his R2 Japanese discs...
Also looks like a HDMI imput may be needed on your TV...

I'm off to Vegas in a few hours.
If I buy an HD DVD player there, what problems am I letting myself in for?
Hadn't bothered to study the various brands yet. Some QUICK advice would be appreciated. What to go for. What to avoid.
For use on either a 506XDE which JL are waiting to deliver as soon as I return, or I might just wait for a 5000EX.....
(I understand about voltage / plug differences & HM C&E.)

Yep to the Universal titles.
Hanging fire on putting players back up for now, need to check availability next week and also couple of problems / issues coming in from people that already have this player.
Seems SD DVD's that are not Region 1 won't play, plus DD+ soundtracks are causing Amps etc to come up with DTS for some reason. Also some players locking up etc..
I am keeping an eye out, should hopefully have our office player arriving early next week.

Hi Craig. Please let me know if you have an expected allocation (on release) for those who pre ordered before you took the player down? Thanks

Hi,
I should have our office one here on Wednesday.
We have had a few more arrive that will stay in our Philly office for a few more days. I need to check this player out first and then email customers who pre ordered just to make sure they are happy with the new things that have come to light since this player was released (such as will only play Region 1 discs, even though HD Discs dont have Region Coding, SD's do and so this player will not play anything other than 0 and 1).
On Wednesday i will post plenty of pics and details, as should be one of the first in the UK to have this player arrive.

The DTS issue is not really an issue at all, its just the way toshiba have implimented the sound decoders. If you use SPDIF out the sound will be converted to DTS even if you have selected DD+.
SSpears said
"All streams are decoded and if you are set to ouput bitsteam over SPDIF, it uses a real-time DTS encoder and re-compresses the audio"

the cost works out at £280 before tax what do you recon this will cost in the uk, £399??, £499
499 would be ******** and a complete ripoff though but i would concider it at 399

Just confired the cost (inc UK duty, VAT and shipping from the US) and delievered to my door it's £456 for my US order. The duty, VAT and shipping adds £172 to the unit cost !!
last I heard UK release was rumoured to be Nov 06. I'm guessing it will be a straight $-£ swap i.e. £499 MRSP for the A1. But who knows :god:

ill probably just get a ps3 instead for less or the same, was getting one anyway
would of concidered importing one if it was less than 399 all in, i can see no reason why the product should be a 1$ to 1£ conversion for the uk price:suicide:

Hi AVI,
Was this info from the shipping company? £456 doesn’t seem too bad
Where did you order yours from? And presume you used Parcels to Go

Hi Steve
Bought the player from Crutchfield for $499 inc ground shipping to P2G in Miami. Be aware that the P2G service is based on volumetric weight (A1 parcel = 27Kg) not just the actual weight (12.8kg). Anyway they confirmed shipment from US to my home at £74.99. They will pay duty (£40) and VAT (£57) then re-bill me for this prior to delivery. Due to the way they import duty and vat is usually based on the unit cost only.
Interestingly Crutchfield had free stock yeterday morning following a shipment of 600 units. They had all sold by the afternoon. By the way the service from Crutchfield has been outstading.
hope this help !

Hi Avi,
I have also bought a HD-DVD player from Crutchfield and agree that there customer service was outstanding, far better than anything in the UK
Mine is expected in Miami (P2G) on the 21/04. How did P2G contact you, was it email or by phone? Also a little unsure about being re-billed, how does that work? You pay shipping, the unit is delivered to your home and then they automatically rebill your card or do they send you an invoice for duty (like Fedex) that you pay yourself.
How long will it take to get here from Miami, probably looking at 4/5 days including customs delay, but hopefully we should have them by next Saturday (long weekend) for a good play
By the way, where did you buy your HD DVD's from. I have them ordered form Amazon.com but they havent shipped yet. Want to have something to play on it when it arrives:eek:

Hi ROBERTT
I tried to contact P2G by email and phone. Let me just say they're not as responsive as Crutchfield. So keep trying customer services again and again and again - you get the picture.
How the "import service" works
When your item arrives at P2G US you should be contacted via email by P2G within 24 hours.
At this point they will confirm the shipping cost based on the actual volumetric weight. A box of 22"x19"x11"has a volumetric weight equiv to 27Kg which is £109.
Once you agree and pay they ship the item to the UK (normal service 4-5 days). I think they bring in two bulk shipments each week.
Once your item hits UK customs a duty and VAT charge is made and covered by P2G via their HMCE account. They don't charge a hadling fee for doing this and your item will not pass go unless this is paid.
Once this is done you will be contacted again (email) to confirm the duty/VAT charge and you must pay this before they will make delivery to you.
Hope this helps

Hi AVI,
so they are quoting £74.99 and not the £109.99 presume this mean the box must be smaller
Thanks for you help

No - But I argued that their web site was misleading as the import service used a different calc and did not link to the place it should. So as a one off they they agreed to £74.99 i.e the up to 25kg advertised in the import service.

And to think a colleague of mine at work has had this "Wistar HDDVD Player" for the last few months and he swears blind that it is a proper HDDVD player and has even been gloating at work this week saying that he has ordered 2 HDDVD movies and he can't wait to watch them...
He seriously believes he will be able to watch these HDDVD's on his Wistar player.
Surely not

So the rest of use can expect to pay another £35
Ok Just checked the Amazon site and the quote the " Product Dimensions: 16.0 x 20.0 x 12.0 inches ; 12.0 pounds "
which works out at 23.3 Kilo on there volume thing which would work out at the £74.99.
I mean £35 is alot of difference

My UPS tracking info says the package weighs 28.2lbs. I assume the Amazon dimmension is the Tosh box. Do Amazon double box ?
12 lbs sounds very light for a fully packaged unit and this player isn't small.
The outer box and additional bits that Crutchfield include (Cable Labels, their Home Catalog) could explain the some of the difference. Also one of the Ebay auction had the Tosh package weight at 24lbs so I maybe Amazon made a mistake.

Yes 12 lbs does seem light,
But would the box size be right? Have posted on the other AVforums ;) to see if some one would measure the out box
Those extra inches make all the difference well £35 to be precise
hope you don't mind all the question, just excited for you :smashin:

I think Amazon defo have a problem on weight specs as they quote XA1 with a shipping weight of 8lbs:eek: and this is heavier than the A1.
This is an extract from a question on an ebay listing for an A1 - "the box says it weighs 24 lbs, and the dimensions are about 19x22x11 (inches)"
But in the end you will be charged for the actual volumetric size anyway once P2G get there hands on it.
