Mr Gordo's PHOTO thread
Thought I'd add some photo links to my PBASE site here. Looking for opinions on how I am progressing really.
I've not really had much time to get to grips with my new 350d. I had a short trip to Brussels for a wedding and after that I went and bought a couple of new lenses. The 70-200 F4L canon and a Sigma 10-20mm ex dg wide angle. As my job involves travelling alot I thought these two would be decent starts. Once I have mastered technique a bit more I'll look at a mid range L series zoom I think. Anyway, the full story of why I started to take up photography is on the Profile page on my PBASE account, GMFism.
On to the pics. This first one is of a gravestone in a church yard in Union St in Aberdeen. I had a morning free in Aberdeen two or three days ago and went for a walk. I'd never used the wide angle lens. This is taken with the 70-200F4L. I saw this headstone and thought it was quite peculiar. The tree cross is a symble of a cabinet maker it seems.

10-20mm Sigma v 70-200 F4L
Here is an image of an interesting headstone I found. This image is taken with the Sigma 10-20mm EX DG lens. I was standing about 1-2 feet from the stone. The top is out of focus I think because I stupidly used the F4 aperture. It was the first image I took with this lens.
The second image I've put to B+W in PS2. It was taken with the Canon 70-200 F4L and I was around 15-20 feet away from the stone.
It's really quite amazing how wide a field of view the 10-20 gives. I was amazed when I looked through the viewfinder for the first time. You'll see when I get to the landscapes from Dornoch and Cromarty that it comes in to its own then.....

These are smaller than I was hoping. I'll resize the bigger images that wont upload for the rest. In the meantime this should give you some idea of difference in perspecives

Learning about light. The sky and light was changing rapidly when I was trying to take pics on this day. The sky in northern Scotland is quite unlike anything I've seen down south. It does seem at times that there is miles more sky than land....it's quite strange. the clouds as well seem so low and so "fluffy cloud" like.
If someone has the embed image tags then can you tell me what they are? The shortcut on the REPLY part of this site doesn't work for me.

My favourite of the landscape style images so far from this trip.

Me again
To embed an image do [*img]the picture URL here[/img] (without the * in the first tag). You can quote this reply and see the code if you are still stuck.
Was there something on the lens when you took this picture (bottom left)?

Waterfall down side of Loch Ness. Tried different shutter speeds to work out how to make water milky. I slowed it down by using very closed aperture and highest iso. It looks like I could have done with some ND filters to try to get the effect I was after. Will try again on another waterfall later today if I get time....

Ah the joys of living in Scotland!
I stay in Aberdeen (well just outside in the country kinda thing) and you do get some nice sky's up here. My dad being a weather man is addiced to the clouds! The graveyard in union street is quite a strange site considering it is bang in the middle of Aberdeen. Is quite spooky especially if you are there at night after stumbling out of a club.
For all of the pics with the sky in, did you have any filters or anything on the camera or was there any editing done in PS as my sky's always come out looking so over exposed and nothing like that and was just concerned as I have the same camera? Maybe it is because I only have the kit lense
