View Full Version : HD - The end of the double disc special edition?
Sorry if this has been discussed before but, im curious about how films on either of the 2 new HD formats will be marketed. With DVD you have the choice of single disc or the special edition 2dvd version but that wont be necessary with hd/blu anymore. Will they eventually give in to consumer expection and still make 2disc sets in hi-def just to give people the feeling that theyre getting better value for the extra money?
Will people be happy spending more on the special edition with extras even tho its the same size with one disc? Or will the special edition dissapear completely? The market will still probably require vanilla releases i expect
Likewise will people be really happy about getting a trilogy on one small disc?
If all these things are going to be problems for consumers then that would nullify any differences in data size between the formats if people are going to want films on seperate discs anyway.

:S surely the extra capacity of the disk will be taken up with the extra information that a higher bitrate takes up. Although I know this is not 100% the case, I dont think you will be able to fit 2 HD films on one disk. Have you seen the size of the HD clips we have so far; 200mb for 2 minutes.

What may happen is HD for main feature but second DVD disc for features (to cut costs and probably not many HD cams to shoot the director or crew with.....or the outakes and things

...just like on Warner's first three titles - The Phantom Of The Opera, Million Dollar Baby and The Last Samurai.

The first Warner titles are 30gb single disc releases. Some people misinterpreted them as being two given how the features were set out on the press release, although it’s pretty straight forward I think the noted resolution difference merely confused them. Feature (1080/24p) and extras (480i) are all on the one disc. The menus allow you to run the extras during the film in a small picture in picture window, and you also have the option to view them full screen as normal.
Thanks for the correction. ;)

That's ok. The odd disc may even be 15gb in all honesty, but nevertheless, they are all single disc affairs. There’s no reason any forthcoming title warrants a second disc for extras at the moment. Taking Last Samurai as an example, I forget whether on DVD the 2nd disc was dual layer or not, but lets for the sake of argument say that it was, and on the DVD it near maxed out the 9gb capacity using MPEG2 – well using VC1 for all that identical 480i content from the DVD is going to reduce the size significantly to around 5.6gb, or 5gb. Perhaps even a little less.
DVDs like Batman Begins and Goblet of fire that had DVD-5s for their extras would come in at around 2gb using VC1, so really you quickly see how an advanced codec can be used for standard def extras and have them take up next to no space at all.
I do think in response to Lanus’ original question that there will certianly be multi-disc releases on both formats, but in most cases, certainly those where advanced video codecs are used for both the HD feature and standard def extras, 30gb will remain more than enough. Titles using MPEG2 on Blu Ray, save for those that might come on 50gb discs, might well have a second DVD or single layer BD-Rom to house their extras.
