Picture size auto adjust

I'm sure this question has been raised elsewhere but I can't find it. When playing a DVD using an HDMI cable I can't adjust the picture size on the TV. Is this normal as the black bars on the screen are massive. I have had to go back to a scart connection as I just can't watch such a narrow picture.

Also, when I finally decide to go to Sky HD will the picture fit my screen or will I still have huge black bars on screen. Apologies if this seems a stupid question but it is annoying as I bought the equipment because of its HD properties.

Thanks in advance

Try looking in the DVD (Standard definition) section. You may find your answer easier in there.

If you look at the forums where people with the Telewest TVDrive post, there are literally hundreds of posts on the 4.3 to 16.9 issue. It seems that over HDMI the majority of TV's do not give you the option to "stretch" 4.3 output to give you widescreen. This is an issue for many as they do not like the pillar box effect with the black bars. Many of the "satallite" channels are broadcast in 4.3 so you get black bars down each side.

I was not aware of this. I own one of first HDMI equiped TVs available in this country (4 series Pioneer Plasma) and this has no problem adjusting picture aspect ratio via HDMI.
