Dear every body who owns homechoice top box,
I am thinking about switching to homechoice broadband provider. All I need is:
Base Pack ( 14.99 for first 3 months then 17.99 after)
I would like : Wireless broadband internet to 2 desktop + 2 laptop in a 3-bedroom house
If I call homechoice to comeover to install, they will charge me an arm and a leg (85pounds for the first PC + 65 pounds for the second + 50 pound for the third)
All I would like to know if I could do it myself at home ( set up and install wireless broadband) .
At this moment, I own NetGear DG834GT router and 3 WG111T adaptors. My Phone line is BT. AOL is my Broadband provider at this moment.
Did any one set up like this successfully? Please let me know is it possible?
I am looking forward to your advice.

Im suscribing to homechoice in a few weeks when Im moving house.
Although I Im going to opt out on the optional phone package, and switch my TalkTalk account over with the BT line.
With regards to setting up wireless, its criminal they should charge that when its a piece of p**s! The Homechoice set top box has a ADSL modem intergrated, so its just a case of adding a wireless access point via the ethernet port on the box.
Then so long as your laptops have wireless PCMCIA cards/or already wireless intergrated, hook up your PCs with either a Wireless PCI card or a adapter, all can be bought cheaply from a place like Ebuyer. Then its just a case of setting them up so they all see each other, which is fairly straight forward. Also set up a security like WEP, so no snooping little rascals can get on your network. Which theres countless information on the net or in the instuction manuals that come with the gear.
I myself am waiting for the Homeplug AV to come out at some point soon. My house is on three floors so I am predicting wireless will be somewhat flakey, especially so much so that I'll be wanting to stream HD material down to my media player. Homeplug allows you to use your electricity mains around your house as a network, and will be shortly heading up to (predicted) speeds of 200mb/s!

Yes, its very easy to do. You will need another router (using ethernet, NOT pluging into the telephone line)
I use the linksys wrt54G. Plug in and it works in minutes.

errrrr I work for homechoice, or should I call that tiscali and yes Id' do it yourself the homechoice wireless router is only a B router not G and so will be slower than you're used to.

-- so any hot news on a homechoice/tiscali launch?? :D :D
to clarify a lot of the questions, then - I have an ancient BT adsl modem, connected to a netgear DS104 ethernet hub, so I can get 'net on my laptop and 2 other PCs...
when I get the homechoice box, can I just take a Cat5 from that, to my hub??? (I just need the right IP and gateway...)
errrrr I work for homechoice, or should I call that tiscali and yes Id' do it yourself the homechoice wireless router is only a B router not G and so will be slower than you're used to.
then I suggest you stop stuffing your face with banana's and learn about the products homechoice supply since they supply a netgear wgr614 router and have since they first started selling wireless routers back with the version 3 of this model and guess what it's a 802.11g router it can work with in the b framework but is a g which means time for you to stop playing with your nuts.
you need a wireless router and not just an access point if you are intending connecting multiple machines to the homechoice box as the box is not a router

ahhhh new member 1 post, mmm sounds like someone inhouse coming to bash me. So its either a member of caretech or one of the many knobs from development :hiya:
Well seeing as you like to take it via the rude route, this wasn't the router that was mentioned to me when i had a look via their wireless method, so perhaps you should be ear bashing cust care and not myself for handing out misinformation. Next you'll be explaining that its good value for money as well taking up their wireless router. No no no you'll be explaining how using the house own power sockets as an inhouse network is such a brilliant method as well.
When something within the company works well then I'm happy to promote it but this it wasnt in this case. So get off your high horse.
Its all irrelavent anyway as the company is going white label in the near future to be over taken by the ever so popular Tiscali, so if you are in house .. not long my friend you must be panicing.
Be sure to let me know who you are that way next time you pass by my desk I can indeed grab my nuts and wave them at you.
arrhhh you're boring me now

actually was doing a quick search and came across your bulldrek and thought i'd correct your mis-information. and if you really do work for homechoice then perhaps you should mention to the supervisor manager of the person who told you B and also your own manager because your a moron. And as for buying the homechoice wireless product i wouldn't recommend it unless it were you as i doubt you'd be able to set it up, the same goes for the unplug power socket product you would be able to find it cheaper elswhere but i would say it's more stable than a wireless connection in many instances.
perhaps you should spend less time playing with your nuts and a bit more actually understanding the company you work for. and less time acting like a salesman and blaming everybody else.

You work for HC and dont know your products - Now then let me see where in HC you work.
Possibly marketing as they would know nothing about the product line.
Management - Nah you can at least post on a forum so most of them are ruled out.
Customer Care - Definitly not as they would at lerast ask a knowledgeable techie before posting what you did.
Development? No they would not waste time in here when they could be on www.mcsefordummies.com
HR - What's thye Internet? Nope thats just silly.
Sales - Oh yes, strong smell there - Sell sand to arabs even in London, no product knowledge but know enough to bullshyte their way through mis selling it and the fact you sit at a desk proves it.
Stick to re-applying for your job (Sales are allowed that opportunity with Tiscalli arent they) and stop trying to appear supportive - you arent and cant possibly help these poor customers.
Oh and before you reply No I dont work for HC but did when they were an innovative and useful company and before BT and co got IP tv off the ground and working.

should i or shouldn't I retaliate here, clearly you are new to forums and opposable thumbs and therefore I'll take pity on such an indiviudal as yourself as you know little or nothing with regard to etiquette.
Thank you for pointing out my flaws I will take your points on board, digest them and toss them in the rubbish where they belong. These forums are here for helping individuals and not for slagging people off. If you'd like to do so may i suggest tete la tete , this usually weeds out the people who only cast slurs when sitting behind a keyboard. Now turn that box off in front of you, take a pound out of your piggy box and go and get yourself a life and after youve completed that task get back to flipping burgers at McD's , oh and dont forget to pick up your mum on the way home whos on the fry stall, cause you're obvioulsy 2nd generation McD people.
The information i provide is to the best of knowledge correct at the time of imparting it to others, if I have been misinformed then its a simple mistake but there are better ways of addressing this and not in the childish way you have.

Respond all you like Sonny - The fact of the matter is your not helping your customers by incorrectly advising them about a product sold by the company you alegedly work for. If your going to spout nonsense about your companies products then I reserve the right to tell you and the poor sap who will go out anmd spend cash on kit they dont need because of your ill advised rubbish.
Your set up in Stevenage and Staples Corner I know like the back of my hand as I do the development of the products that go out to the market so until your at least competent at that level do what you do best. Shut up and leave the forums for the big boys.

ds tech it wasnt aimed at you but you posted halfway through my last post and so I didn't see yours, it was aimed at the above poster. Again if you worked there fair enough you know the system and the also know the pro's and cons of it as well. Good to know you knew staples and stevenage, bad you didn't know about croydon and greenwich perhaps its expanded some since you were there.
mmm those development fly by night boys, shame they had no idea with regards to implimentation across a live system. Try and bash me all you want fella but if you want to muck spread its far too easy to highlight developments short comings and something i dont' feel should be handled in this forum.

oh so that's what those stuby things are and you say this is called a forum interesting, so whats playing then.
Thank you for pointing out my flaws I will take your points on board, digest them and toss them in the rubbish where they belong.
well thats the best place to put right next to yourself
These forums are here for helping individuals and not for slagging people off.
they can be for both but if your going to help someone helps if you give them the correct information.
If you'd like to do so may i suggest tete la tete , this usually weeds out the people who only cast slurs when sitting behind a keyboard.
we as to tete la tete never heard of it but tete a tete on the other hand does sound familiar. i usualy find that people who want to take things of the board just wwant to hide.
Now turn that box off in front of you, take a pound out of your piggy box and go and get yourself a life and after youve completed that task get back to flipping burgers at McD's , oh and dont forget to pick up your mum on the way home whos on the fry stall, cause you're obvioulsy 2nd generation McD people.
which box would that be then there are quite a few boxes in front of me,didn't think atm dispensed pounds individualy. my life tends to be a bit more expensive than that so don't judge me by your own standards of life, family and employment.
The information i provide is to the best of knowledge correct at the time of imparting it to others, if I have been misinformed then its a simple mistake but there are better ways of addressing this and not in the childish way you have.
well all i can say is that your knowledge is severley lacking as homechoice never provided or even looked at providing a b router so they would nver have shown you a b router. so if you have been misinformed then shedding some staff seems to be the correct way to go to get rid of the misinformation.

Oh I know Croydon and Greenwich as server sites. Did you know we also had Birmingham and that was shelved even though we secured site, and we had ISG working out of Welwyn Garden City with some of Gordon D's team like implementation and change management. There's even HC kit going into Manchester. Where you there when Ralph and Ted were there?
Do you want me to post up the platform design docs and similar to show my historical background.
No I don't think that would be wise.
Let's just say I know a lot more about the company, platform both old and existing and "your" future than you may think.

Oh yeah I forgot to say one of the worst things I've seen in the direction of the company was when they started to Introduce Service Management - To date it's almost been service managed from excellent into a crock of the proverbial.
You wouldn't have anything to do with that would you Monkeyboy.
At least you have an alternative career to fall back on when it all goes pete tong.
But you wont be getting any trophy's for best dsl and tv rollout that's for sure.
