hi guys, first post , so be gentle.
does anyone know if hd-dvd discs will play on a normal dvd player?
Only the proposed hybrid type that have DVD layer(s) on one side, and HD DVD layer(s) on the other.

sorry dutch, i meant pre-recorded dvds. what i'm getting at is if i'm going to buy new hd-dvd film dvds, why not get them in hi def dvd, ready for when the new hd-dvd players become available in the uk, which would be ok as long as i could play them now in standard def on a normal dvd player. therefore you wouldn't have tobuy them twice.

Which is what Dutch answered. There should be discs available with the Standard Definition DVD on one side, for current players and HD version the other for furture HD-DVD's. One advantage HD-DVD does have over Bluray. A HD-DVD only disc will not work in a SD DVD player as the lasers used to read/write the data are of differnent wavelength's.

You won't be able to play Bluray or HD DVD on a normal dvd player unless it's a hybrid type as explained above. But it will work the other way, you will be able to play a standard dvd on a Bluray or HD DVD whrn they eventualy arrive.
