I am toying with the idea of the new Pioneer 989, but my dealer doesn't stock them as he says "there is no demand for expensive HDMI players, when HD players are just around the corner"
this did get me thinking why should I spend £800 on a HDMI player !

So when do you all think we'll see this new batch ? & is it a good move buying one of the early models & which format should joe bloggs go for ?

I have read that LG will be launching a dual format this year (when I don't know)

So many questions & it's only a DVD for crying out loud

Have a look at this thread, it might answer some questions. I'm going for the 989 myself in the next few weeks.

According to this site http://www.hdtvuk.tv/ Toshiba are launching in the UK in the autumn.

Autum... :thumbsdow :(

I can't wait that long! I need a good importing site, and proof that HD-DVD players are Region free. I want HD content now not in 4months+.

We always get the shaft :(.

We always get the shaft.

Not always - according to early reviews in Japan on the new Toshy HDDVD Player it takes about a minute just to boot up, its physically the size of a smart car, theres macroblocking visible in the ealry titles. Think of Japan & the US as mid stage beta testers, we may get it last every time but the bugs & foibles are usually ironed out?

Cheers for the link: this review thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=665030) appears quite postive. Aside from fan noise (very annoying) and boot up times (a non-issue) it seems to perform, look and work quite well. Almost certainly going to buy this model when it appears in the UK (as long as it can play both US and UK HD DVD disks and can be mulit-regioned for SD DVDs)...
